The\u00a0war in Iran is\u00a0raising\u00a0concerns\u00a0at Florida A&M University\u00a0about stability, oil supply disruptions and the economic toll reaching American households.\u00a0<\/p>\n
A coordinated military strike by the United States and Israel on Feb. 28 targeting key sites in Iran has ignited a rapidly escalating conflict across the Middle East.\u00a0The strikes, aimed at weakening Iran\u2019s political and military leadership, come amid longstanding tensions rooted in decades of hostility between the nations.\u00a0Since February,\u00a0retaliatory strikes have intensified; global oil prices have fluctuated sharply, and concerns over a wider regional conflict continue to grow.\u00a0<\/p>\n
Florida A&M University political science professor\u00a0Dr.\u00a0Victor\u00a0Eno\u00a0said the conflict cannot be understood without its historical context.\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u201cThe conflict has a long history dating from the Iranian Islamic revolution in 1979, when Iran declared Israel and the U.S. its enemies,\u201d Eno said, noting continued clashes over Iran\u2019s regional influence and nuclear ambitions.\u00a0<\/p>\n
Instead, the offensive has triggered retaliation and instability across critical trade routes, particularly in the Strait of Hormuz \u2014 a narrow waterway responsible for transporting\u00a0roughly 20%\u00a0of the world\u2019s oil supply. Analysts warn that\u00a0disruptions there\u00a0often send shockwaves through global markets.\u00a0<\/p>\n
Eno said Iran\u2019s actions in the strait are already having severe consequences.\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u201cIran is attacking ships that carry oil and gas through that route and has laid mines \u2026 so oil and shipping companies are afraid,\u201d he said. \u201cLimited supply has led to high demand and high prices, which translate into inflation.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n
Gas prices in the United States have climbed sharply in recent weeks, with ripple effects hitting grocery costs and everyday expenses. For many Americans, the impact is immediate and unavoidable.\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u201cWhen you have to spend so much on buying gas, you will have less left to spend on other essential everyday needs,\u201d Eno said.\u00a0<\/p>\n
Students and young adults are also closely watching the situation unfold, grappling with both its geopolitical implications and its personal impact.\u00a0<\/p>\n
Mekhi \u201cMJ\u201d Phillips, a senior political science major at FAMU, described the escalation as \u201cunwarranted and dangerous,\u201d criticizing what he sees as a lack of transparency.\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u201cWhat stands out most is the lack of clear objectives for the campaign,\u201d Phillips said. \u201cForeign policy isn\u2019t some intern-level position \u2014 one miscommunication, misunderstanding, or unnecessary bolstering can spell disaster for a region already in turmoil.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n
Phillips added that economic consequences could disproportionately affect vulnerable communities.\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u201cThe increase in oil is already affecting Black people disproportionately,\u201d he said. \u201cCosts of food will definitely rise as it takes oil to produce it.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n
For others, the rising cost of gas serves as one of the clearest connections between an overseas conflict and life at home.\u00a0<\/p>\n
Donnell Junior Dunn, a FAMU\u00a0alumnus,\u00a0said Americans may not fully grasp the gravity of the situation until economic strain intensifies.\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u201cI think the only thing that can make students feel something \u2026 would be serious economic devastation,\u201d\u00a0Dunn said. \u201cInternational events affect us, but we\u2019re often too far removed to fully understand.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n
