{"id":250647,"date":"2026-04-29T04:25:09","date_gmt":"2026-04-29T04:25:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-fl\/250647\/"},"modified":"2026-04-29T04:25:09","modified_gmt":"2026-04-29T04:25:09","slug":"broward-school-board-members-weigh-decision-to-cut-hundreds-of-district-jobs","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-fl\/250647\/","title":{"rendered":"Broward school board members weigh decision to cut hundreds of district jobs"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"text text--small text--normal text--primary\">Published:\u00a0April 28, 2026 at 6:26 PM<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla.  \u2014 The Broward County School Board is preparing to vote on a proposal that could cut hundreds of jobs. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Declining enrollment has led Broward County Public Schools to cut jobs for the first time in twenty years.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">\u201cClearly we don\u2019t want to affect anything,\u201d said school board member Debra Hixon. \u201cHaving to do this is extremely difficult.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">In the last three years, the district lost 25,000 students, and they are projected to lose 10,000 more next year.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">This latest proposal would cut about 809 positions, generating a $41.3 million dollars in savings. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Superintendent Howard Hepburn has maintained that the cuts will not impact students directly.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">\u201cI do not want our teachers impacted, and I do not want our students impacted by the lack of having no teachers in our system,\u201d said school board member Adam Cervera. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Some of the jobs on the chopping block include, counselors, behavioral support, and social workers.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Ultimately, the school board pushed back the vote to a later date.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Board members will workshop the plan during a meeting on May 11, then a week later on May 19 they will hold a formal vote. <\/p>\n<p>\ud83c\udfe0 News From Your Neighborhood<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph b-article-body__copyright\">Copyright 2026 by WPLG Local10.com &#8211; All rights reserved.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" data-chromatic=\"ignore\" alt=\"Sanela Sabovic\" class=\"c-image\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-fl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/https:\/\/author-service-images-sandbox-us-east-1.publishing.aws.arc.pub\/wplginc\/d5c3b100-ae4a-4c5c-aa.jpeg\"  width=\"100\" height=\"100\"\/>Sanela Sabovic<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph b-author-bio__author-description\">Sanela Sabovic joined Local 10 News in September 2012 as an assignment editor and associate producer.\u00a0In August 2015, she became a full-time reporter and fill-in traffic reporter.
