\u201cThe confidence aspect is roaring in Miami,\u201d Murphy explains, adding that she works with clients from all over the country, and that there is a reason many of them ask for Miami matches. \u201cConfidence is like currency [here], and that presents as really sexy. [Miami singles are] driven, they\u2019re ambitious, they\u2019re motivated.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

The downside, which will come as a shock to no one, is that local singles are less likely to commit. \u201cI like to call it the \u2018too much choice\u2019 syndrome,\u201d Murphy says.<\/p>\n

\u201c[Miami is] fast-paced, it\u2019s passionate, it\u2019s full of personality. There\u2019s a mix of cultures; there\u2019s a mix of aesthetics. It just makes it feel really exciting, but also really unpredictable in the sense that people are not truly committing.\u201d<\/p>\n

With a perceived abundance of options, Murphy explains, local singles often assume they\u2019ll have more fun or a stronger connection with the next person they date. \u201cThat\u2019s not always the case.\u201d<\/p>\n

The irony of needing to leave the city to find love in the city isn\u2019t lost on us, but Murphy insists her top location for recruiting Miami matches is Miami International Airport.<\/a>\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cJust because there are so many different people from all walks of life there,\u201d she says. \u201cYou\u2019re meeting really diverse and interesting people that are single and available, and really looking for depth and connection.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

Other places Murphy recommends include the Coconut Grove Organic Farmers Market<\/a>, South Pointe Park<\/a>, Soho Beach House<\/a> (Cecconi\u2019s restaurant on the bottom floor is open to nonmembers), and dog parks (if you have a dog).\u00a0<\/p>\n

Another pro tip: go to these places alone (as long as it\u2019s safe to do so, of course). \u201cIt helps you be more approachable rather than being with a big group of friends or in a social setting.\u201d<\/p>\n

What to Do Next<\/p>\n

Counterintuitively, many people\u2019s first reaction to meeting someone they\u2019re interested in is to become shy and closed off. Murphy stresses the importance of showing that you are open, available, and interested.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cThe whole point is you want someone to feel like you are available, you\u2019re being vulnerable.<\/p>\n

You can start small: compliment them, give a little bit of that flirty banter. You could ask a situational question while you\u2019re talking with them. And then you can, from that transition, say, \u2018Hey, we should grab coffee somewhere,\u2019 or \u2018We should maybe meet up here again if you\u2019re free.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

Murphy recommends contacting prospective dates within 24 hours to signal interest.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cFollow up quickly,\u201d she says. \u201cMiami, again, is fast-paced, and momentum really matters.<\/p>\n

A text message within 24 hours is typically recommended, and that also shows confidence. It prevents the energy from getting lost.\u201d<\/p>\n

First Date Strategies<\/p>\n

First, Murphy suggests picking a location based on your shared interests.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cIf you feel like you\u2019re the most confident at a sit-down dinner, then go ahead and plan that. Obviously, ask your potential match what they\u2019re into to see if it aligns. But if you\u2019re more of a slow dater, you might want to get to know someone without a three-hour investment, because that might feel really overwhelming. [In that case], you can grab a quick drink or a coffee.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

Once you lock down the date, you may feel pressure to ensure everything is perfect. That\u2019s not necessary, advises Murphy.<\/p>\n

\u201cI like to say that first dates don\u2019t always count because there\u2019s a lot of nerves that come into play. So, we want someone to be curious, open-minded, and not be cynical. Try not to bring up any past relationship histories. Stay away from politics; just start small. We like to say practice the three \u201cC\u2019s, \u201d curiosity, communication, and consistency.\u201d<\/p>\n

Ask questions. Stay consistent with what you\u2019re talking about. Communicate how you\u2019re feeling, what you like, and your dislikes. Don\u2019t dive into heavy topics that might overwhelm your potential match.\u201d<\/p>\n

Following Up<\/p>\n

Is there anything worse than having a magical first date and then\u2026nothing? Or sharing a strong connection, only to be relentlessly spammed by your potential lover? Good follow-up, Murphy says, is key.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cIt should flow easily,\u201d she says. \u201cMiami singles respect people who have their own rhythm. When you\u2019re attractive and you\u2019re enjoying life and not waiting on someone else\u2019s response, that really helps. Send a follow-up text message. Say you had a great time and then see if they\u2019re up to planning a second date when their schedule allows.\u201d<\/p>\n
