{"id":252553,"date":"2026-04-30T15:15:30","date_gmt":"2026-04-30T15:15:30","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-fl\/252553\/"},"modified":"2026-04-30T15:15:30","modified_gmt":"2026-04-30T15:15:30","slug":"divers-find-wreck-of-us-largest-naval-loss-of-world-war-i","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-fl\/252553\/","title":{"rendered":"Divers find wreck of US\u2019 largest naval loss of World War I"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmol4pji1001y27qc2o3ka4ie@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The German submarine captain saw his target\u2019s silhouette against the evening sky off the coast of southern England and gave the command to fire a single torpedo.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmol63lbx00023b6qi9qx868w@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            It was the last anyone would see of the US Coast Guard Cutter Tampa and its 131 crew members for more than 107 years.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmol63lbx00033b6qf8qsiaqz@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Three minutes after that German torpedo struck the vessel  amidships, the Tampa was on the bottom of the Atlantic with all crew lost, the largest naval loss for US forces during World War I.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmol63lbx00043b6qydgzn1dj@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            On Wednesday, the Coast Guard announced a team of British divers had located the wreck of the Tampa last weekend at a depth of 300 feet (91 meters) some 50 miles (80 kilometers) off the Cornwall coast.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmol63lbx00053b6q120wfero@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The wreckage was found by the British Gasperados Dive Team, a volunteer technical-diving team that worked with historians and researchers to find wrecks around the UK, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/p\/Gasperados-Dive-Team-61579320759276\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">its Facebook page<\/a>.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmol63lbx00063b6q7cn1r6kf@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The team had been looking for the Tampa since 2023.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmol63lbx00073b6qroncnqax@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cThis discovery is the result of three years of research and exploration. TAMPA is of huge importance to the United States and the relatives of everyone who died that day. Their final resting place is known at last,\u201d dive team leader Steve Mortimer said in a Facebook post.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmol63lbx00083b6qt1b6b4ld@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cFinding TAMPA didn\u2019t just happen last weekend. This was the tenth trip to dive possible targets and everyone \u2013 whether skipper, crew, researcher, liaison or diver \u2013 played a part. We\u2019re still buzzing. We did it!\u201d another Facebook post said.\n    <\/p>\n<p>       <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-fl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/260429-g-kh296-1002.jpeg\" alt=\"A historical photo of Coast Guard Cutter Tampa, which was lost in 1918 during World War I after being torpedoed by a German submarine.\" class=\"image_large__dam-img image_large__dam-img--loading\" onload=\"this.classList.remove('image_large__dam-img--loading')\" onerror=\"imageLoadError(this)\" height=\"1164\" width=\"1430\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmol63lbx00093b6qtng8xn6s@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The Coast Guard said it provided the group with records and data to confirm the wreck was the Tampa.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmol63lbx000a3b6q0fbwc7ia@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cThis included the archival images of the deck fittings, ship\u2019s wheel, bell, weaponry and archival images of the Tampa,\u201d William Thiesen, Coast Guard Atlantic area historian, said in the statement.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmol63lbx000b3b6qca4u8yz3@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.news.uscg.mil\/Portals\/11\/Headquarters\/Remember_The_Tampa_080919.pdf?ver=ybZqGct_XCfH6FKl6ajHFw%3d%3d\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Coast Guard history of the Tampa<\/a> gives details of its final voyage.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmol63lbx000c3b6qkjvplp55@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            On September 17, 1918, the ship began convoy duty in the Atlantic waters. But on September 26, the Tampa\u2019s captain requested permission to leave the convoy it was escorting as his ship was running dangerously low on coal to power its boilers and needed to refuel.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmol63lbx000d3b6q6a6yvbby@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Commanders granted the captain\u2019s request, and the ship headed to a port in Wales at full speed around 4 p.m.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmol63lbx000e3b6qzif5ql6n@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Around 8:15 p.m., it was spotted by the German sub UB-41 which fired a lone torpedo. The blast from the torpedo was followed by a secondary explosion, caused by either coal dust igniting or depth charges aboard the Tampa detonating, according to the Coast Guard history.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmol63lbx000f3b6qbva46nwp@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            A plane sent out to search for the ship when it did not arrive at its destination found pieces of its wreckage the next day.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmol63lbx000g3b6q3qpou4yw@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Aboard were 111 Coast Guardsmen, four US Navy sailors, and 16 Britons, including Royal Navy personnel and civilians.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmol63lbx000h3b6q0fkz4aul@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The Coast Guardsmen came from all walks of life and regions of the US and included immigrants from Russia and Norway. Eleven of the lost crew were Black according to a Coast Guard history of the ship. They were the first minority Coast Guardsmen killed in combat.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmol63lbx000i3b6q4r60moom@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cWhen the Tampa was lost with all hands in 1918, it left an enduring grief in our service,\u201d Coast Guard commandant Adm.
