Florida\u2019s general trend is going in the same direction as the national indicators. DOL officials say there were 179,765 initial unemployment claims last week. It\u2019s a more pronounced drop than the Florida decline. Nationally, the figure fell by 26,668 new filings from the previous week. That\u2019s a 12.9% slide.<\/p>\n
It\u2019s a bigger drop than DOL analysts had expected. Economists projected there would be only a 0.8% decline nationwide, or 1,724 fewer unemployment claims from the previous week.<\/p>\n
The latest initial jobless claim figures are also a substantial drop in the year-over-year comparison. There were 224,021 initial claims for the comparable week in 2025 nationally. That\u2019s a whopping 21.9% difference in the national annual comparison.<\/p>\n
While the latest Florida decline in new jobless claims was nominal, it\u2019s still upbeat news compared to the general unemployment rate across the state.<\/p>\n That figure has been increasing in the last few data releases by\u00a0FloridaCommerce<\/a>, the state\u2019s economic development bureau. The most recent monthly jobless rate for\u00a0February was 4.6%<\/a>. It was an indicator of an upward trajectory for the state. It was the second month in a row that figure saw a hike after January\u2019s unemployment rate rose to 4.5%.<\/p>\n For nearly half a decade, Florida officials crowed about having a lower unemployment rate than the national figure.
