\"BigA perception change has taken place at many of iHeartMedia\u2019s Classic Rock stations in recent months as they remove the word \u201cClassic\u201d from their positioning.<\/p>\n

Coming as the stations continue to add more music from the late 1990s and early 2000s, the stations are moving to positioning statements more closely identified with stations in other formats. As discussed in Ross On Radio today<\/a>, \u201cQ104.3<\/a>\u201d WAXQ New York has shifted from \u201cNew York\u2019s Classic Rock\u201d to \u201cNew York\u2019s Rock\u201d. Similarly, 102.5 KZOK<\/a> Seattle is now \u201cSeattle\u2019s Rock\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u201c99.7 The Fox<\/a>\u201d WRFX Charlotte is now going by \u201cCharlotte\u2019s Rock of the 70s, 80s, and 90s\u201d. 101.5 KGB-FM<\/a> is \u201cSan Diego\u2019s 80s, 90s & More\u201d. \u201cBig 105.9<\/a>\u201d WBGG-FM, which had used \u201cMiami\u2019s Greatest Hits\u201d in early 2025, now is \u201cMiami\u2019s Rock Hits\u201d. <\/p>\n

Even markets that have both Classic Rock and a Mainstream Rock station have seen changes. \u201cLone Star 92.5<\/a>\u201d KZPS Dallas is now positioning as \u201cDallas Rocks\u201d, while \u201c97.1 The Eagle<\/a>\u201d KEGL remains \u201cDallas\/Fort Worth\u2019s Rock Station\u201d. \u201c103.5 The Fox<\/a>\u201d KRFX Denver is using \u201cColorado\u2019s Rock Station\u201d as sister 107.9 KBPI<\/a> continues to \u201cRock The Rockies\u201d.<\/p>\n

Only a few stations are continuing to use Classic Rock in their positioning including 100.7 WZLX<\/a> Boston, \u201cBig 100<\/a>\u201d WBIG-FM Washington, and \u201c105.9 The Rock<\/a>\u201d WNRQ Nashville.<\/p>\n

As Ross discussed today<\/a>, \u201cIf stations are more comfortable as just \u201crock\u201d now, it might be because there\u2019s less need to choose sides. Most Alternative and Active stations aren\u2019t playing a lot of currents. Without meaning to dismiss the music that rock programmers are excited about now, the last major body of hit rock, at least in terms of multi-format support was the pop\/punk of the mid-\u201900s.
