\u201cWithout Shade, Without Rest\u201d<\/a> tells the story of the fight for heat ordinances to protect farm workers in Florida. Nearly a hundred people attended the screening.<\/p>\nIt was screened last week in Tampa\u2019s Community Church. The film was followed by a Q&R with filmmakers Jose Jesus Zaragoza, Max Maldonado and some representatives from We Count and the Coalition of Immokalee Workers, Claudia Navarro and Lupe Gonzalez.<\/p>\n
The documentary begins with the death of a farm worker in Miami-Dade due to heat stroke.<\/p>\n
It inspired the campaign \u201cQu\u00e9 Calor!\u201d pushed by the organization \u201cWe Count!\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cWorkers are at the forefront facing climate adaptation, right?\u201d said Navarro at the screening. \u201cWe\u2019re not just talking about a worker who experiences extreme heat outdoors. What happens when he goes home, or they go home and they don\u2019t have air conditioning because their landlord doesn\u2019t care enough to repair it, right?\u201d<\/p>\n
The film follows We Count\u2019s fight for a countywide heat ordinance, which stalled in 2024.<\/p>\n
It was then that the Florida legislature passed a preemptive bill banning local municipalities from imposing any heat ordinances.<\/p>\n
It touches on the experiences of workers who also struggle with conditions like diabetes that can be more precarious under extreme heat.<\/p>\n
Fair Food Program<\/p>\n
After the preemptive bill, We Count! partnered with the Coalition of Immokalee Workers who had developed the Fair Food Program.<\/p>\n
The coalition signs agreements with big retail companies like Walmart and McDonalds to only buy produce from farmers and industries that abide by the heat regulations and other worker protections set by the coalition.<\/p>\n
The regulations include water, shade, and heat breaks when temperatures reach above 90 degrees.<\/p>\n
They currently have agreements with 14 retail companies, many of which were achieved through protests and boycotts.\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u201cWe have seen and we have been victims of abuses such as wage theft, sexual harassment, and even in extreme cases, modern-day slavery in the agriculture industry,\u201d said Lupe Gonzalez from the CIW. \u201cThe fighting in Immokalee began to protect people from those abuses.\u201d<\/p>\n
Gonzalez spoke in Spanish and her answers were translated by Marcos Martins from We Count! This linguistic choice was also present in the docummentary.<\/p>\n
The film is almost entirely in Spanish with Zaragoza and Maldonado choosing instead of translations to include bilingual subtitles. <\/p>\n
For Maldonado, the choice was about filmmakers and audiences \u201cdoing the effort to meet people where they are, in the language they speak.\u201d <\/p>\n
Tomorrow, May 1st, We Count! will hold a demonstration in Miami.<\/p>\n
