Closures along I-10 from Murray Hill in Jacksonville to Baldwin due to construction.

The construction is broken up into two separate projects: resurfacing and widening.

Wrapping up is the resurfacing of I-10 between the First Coast Expressway and the Nassau County Line heading toward Macclenny.

“That’s that brand new, fresh asphalt that you get to experience and all the way to the Nassau County line,” said Florida Department of Transportation Spokesperson Hampton Ray. “I spoke to the contractor, and they expect it to be completed by the end of May.”

As for the portion of I-10 between I-95 and I-295, Ray said there are still ways to go. The project is extensive, adding additional travel and auxiliary lanes, both eastbound and westbound, to improve traffic flow.

The project cost about $176 million.

“If you are traveling west to Macclenny, you already are in the final configuration of the roadway, which means you’re already seeing some improvement in terms of congestion relief,” Ray said “If you’re heading downtown, we’re not quite there yet. We still have some final alignments coming up.”

Eastbound drivers can expect some traffic shifts to take place over the next several months.

“The project is extensive, and it does include a lot of drainage improvements, overhead signage, and of course, the more roomier drive for you, and that’s congestion relief,” said Ray.

You probably didn’t know the widening project also includes upgrades to the existing Day Avenue pedestrian tunnel underneath I-10 connecting the Murray Hill and Lackawanna neighborhoods. Lights are being added, as well as structural improvements at each end.

“We probably wouldn’t build something like this today.
