U.S. Rep. Kathy Castor<\/a> is planting an early flag in a reshaped political battlefield<\/a> for Florida\u2019s 14th Congressional District.<\/p>\n

Castor announced plans to run for re-election in CD 14 on social media, aiming to defend portions of her seat that remain in Hillsborough \u2014 her home county \u2014 after legislators approved a new map proposed by Gov. Ron DeSantis<\/a> that redraws Tampa Bay\u2019s congressional lines.<\/p>\n

The map breaks apart<\/a> Castor\u2019s current base of blue-leaning voters that span Pinellas and Hillsborough along both sides of Tampa Bay, forcing a recalibration of the region\u2019s political balance<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cI love my hometown and I love my neighbors, so no matter how they draw lines on a congressional map I\u2019m going to stand up for you and your pocket book,\u201d Castor said in a video shared on social media<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey\u2019re trying to avoid accountability for the high cost of living and this affordability squeeze, ripping your healthcare away, making your electric bills more expensive. Groceries are sky-high and we need a champion from right here at home who is going to stand up to the special interests and not let them avoid accountability. There\u2019s too much corruption and graft in Washington, D.C., and in Tallahassee, and I\u2019m not going to stand for it. I am announcing today that I am a candidate for congressional district 14. My home.\u201d<\/p>\n

Castor is the latest high-profile politician to publicly declare which district they intend to run in. Republican Sydney Gruters<\/a> was quick to affirm her bid<\/a> for Florida\u2019s 16th Congressional District to replace a retiring U.S. Rep. Vern Buchanan<\/a>. That district will now include portions of south Pinellas County<\/a> that were previously in Castor\u2019s CD 14.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Republican U.S. Rep. Greg Steube<\/a> has declared plans to seek re-election to Florida\u2019s 17th Congressional District. Republican U.S. Rep. Anna Paulina Luna<\/a> is expected to continue her re-election bid to CD 13 \u2014 which she filed for before the new map was approved.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Castor\u2019s campaign said the new map is \u201cillegally gerrymandered.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cPresident (Donald) Trump, DeSantis and Republicans believe it is more important to rig an election to avoid accountability. Governor DeSantis chose to give a political favor to Trump rather than protect Floridians\u2019 constitutional rights and their economic well-being,\u201d Castor said in a statement also announcing her campaign plans.<\/p>\n

\u201cWith the release of these new congressional maps, I remain committed to fighting to increase pay for MacDill Air Force base military service members and civilians, keeping Tampa Airport the best in the world, lifting our neighborhoods and making our community more resilient to floods and hurricanes. I am focused on fighting to lower the cost of living, take on the drivers of higher prices and improve everyday lives of the people I serve.\u201d<\/p>\n

The newly configured district represents a significant shift.<\/p>\n

Under the previous map, Castor\u2019s district was anchored in Tampa and much of Hillsborough County, forming a reliable Democratic stronghold with a large base of urban voters. The new configuration fractures that base \u2014 splitting much of the Tampa Bay region\u2019s Democratic voting bloc into new territory that leans Republican.<\/p>\n

Castor called the map an effort by Republican leaders to sidestep voter accountability.<\/p>\n

\u201cThese new maps in Florida are blatantly illegal,\u201d Castor said.<\/p>\n

\u201cIn 2010, Florida voters overwhelmingly amended our state constitution to explicitly prohibit partisan gerrymandering. Republicans also are wasting time and taxpayer money \u2014 money that could be better spent on increasing teacher salaries, providing health care to children, hurricane recovery and improving our roads. The courts must act swiftly to strike the maps, uphold Florida\u2019s Constitution and honor the voices of its voters.\u201d<\/p>\n

The new map opens the door for a more competitive contest than Castor has faced in recent cycles, particularly if Republican candidates view the reconfigured district as a viable battleground, although the district still includes a significant amount of Democratic voters \u2014 unlike other Tampa Bay communities affected by the change.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"U.S. Rep.
