(WALA) -A tiny home village for senior citizens has officially opened in Pensacola, nearly two years after the Catholic Diocese of Pensacola-Tallahassee broke ground on the project.

Trinity Village is a nine-home community specifically for senior citizens who are having trouble finding affordable housing.

“One thing that really surprised me was a lot of the homeless population are senior citizens, people over the age of 60,” said Deacon Ray Aguado of the Catholic Diocese of Pensacola-Tallahassee.

Addressing housing challenges

Bishop William Wack of the Catholic Diocese of Pensacola-Tallahassee said the village targets a specific need.

“People who are on a fixed income who are really struggling with rising rents and housing prices and because of that have to make choices about medication or eating vs staying in a shelter so we want to give them stable housing that they can afford,” Wack said.

The diocese says the project cost a little over one million dollars and was paid for with private donations. Each home has a kitchenette, bathroom and a bedroom.

“Compared to what someone has now maybe living under a bridge, or on the street or in a homeless shelter, this is heavenly,” Wack said.

David Sanford is hoping to move into one of the homes once the application process starts next week.

“Very roomy, I could move around in there in my chair. The opportunity is to uplift myself, be stronger and live a better life,” Sanford said.

The church hopes to have people moved into the homes before the month is over. The diocese says it also plans to provide case management, counseling and mentoring for those who live at Trinity Village.

The church has identified more land that it already owns and plans to build more tiny homes in the future.
