(CBS12)  \u2014 &#8220;This was a calculated, premeditated act of pure evil.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>That is how <a href=\"https:\/\/cbs12.com\/topic\/Hillsborough%20County%20Sheriff\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Hillsborough County Sheriff<\/a> Chad Chronister described the murders of University of South Florida doctoral students <a href=\"https:\/\/cbs12.com\/news\/local\/officials-plead-for-tips-as-2-usf-students-missing-considered-endangered-florida-news-university-of-south-florida-police-department-missing-tampa-missing-persons\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Zamil Limon<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/cbs12.com\/news\/local\/florida-crime-news-nahida-bristy-zamil-limon-clothes-on-second-body-match-missing-usf-student-as-killings-probe-deepens-howard-frankland-bridge-human-remains-body-found-inside-trash-bag-tied-hisham-abugharbieh-hillsborough-county-sheriffs-office-murders\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Nahida Bristy,<\/a> on Friday, a case that began with worried classmates in mid-April and ended days later with the arrest of the man who shared Limon\u2019s apartment.<\/p>\n<p>The investigation began April 17, when the University of South Florida Police Department was notified that Bristy was missing. Friends and colleagues reported she failed to show up for work, missed academic obligations and stopped responding to messages\u2014behavior authorities said was entirely out of character.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe never missed her thesis meetings. She never missed work,\u201d Chronister said. \u201cThat\u2019s what immediately told us something was wrong.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The following day, April 18, a friend contacted authorities to report Limon missing under similarly concerning circumstances.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese were responsible, accountable students,\u201d Chronister said. \u201cWhen people like that suddenly disappear, we treat it as an emergency.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Detectives soon focused on Limon\u2019s off campus apartment, where he lived with two roommates. Investigators noted that one roommate, later identified as Hisham Aburghabieh, was evasive and inconsistent in his answers, while the second roommate provided information and cooperated.<\/p>\n<p>See Related: <a href=\"https:\/\/cbs12.com\/news\/local\/usf-double-murder-suspect-denied-bond-as-victims-body-found-and-death-penalty-looms-university-of-south-florida-murders-roommate-arrested-zamil-limon-nahida-bristy-hillsborough-county-sheriffs-office-first-degree-murder-photos-videos-investigation\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">USF double murder suspect denied bond as victim\u2019s remains found and death penalty looms<\/a><\/p>\n<p>While canvassing the area, detectives searched a trash compactor at the apartment complex and found several personal items belonging to Limon, including his student identification, wallet, glasses and heavily blood-soaked clothing.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat discovery changed everything,\u201d Chronister said. \u201cAt that moment, this was no longer just a missing persons case.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>With a search warrant, investigators returned to the apartment and used forensic technology to locate a large pool of blood in the kitchen, a trail down the hallway and evidence inside Aburghabieh\u2019s bedroom indicating a body had been positioned on the floor. Officials said the amount of blood indicated the victim could not have survived the injuries.<\/p>\n<p>Investigators also analyzed Aburghabieh\u2019s cell phone, which had been wiped clean. A deeper forensic examination recovered internet searches made days before the students disappeared.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe searched topics like whether a knife can penetrate a skull, if a neighbor would hear a gunshot, and how to dispose of a body,\u201d Chronister said. \u201cThese searches happened before anyone was reported missing. (HCSO) <\/p>\n<p>Cell phone location data placed Aburghabieh in Pinellas County and on the <a href=\"https:\/\/cbs12.com\/topic\/Howard%20Frankland%20Bridge\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Howard Frankland Bridge<\/a> in the days following the students\u2019 disappearance. On April 22, detectives searched along the northbound side of the bridge and located a large black trash bag containing Limon\u2019s remains.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe was bound, stabbed multiple times and discarded,\u201d Chronister said. \u201cIt\u2019s horrific.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Two days later, on <a href=\"https:\/\/cbs12.com\/news\/local\/body-found-tampa-bay-amid-search-missing-university-south-florida-doctoral-student-howard-frankland-bridge-zamil-limon-nahida-bristy-swat-hillsborough-county-sheriffs-office-crime-human-remains\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">April 24<\/a>, recreational kayakers discovered another trash bag tangled in mangroves in Pinellas County. Due to advanced decomposition, investigators used DNA testing, dental records and clothing confirmation to positively <a href=\"https:\/\/cbs12.com\/news\/local\/florida-crime-news-nahida-bristy-zamil-limon-clothes-on-second-body-match-missing-usf-student-as-killings-probe-deepens-howard-frankland-bridge-human-remains-body-found-inside-trash-bag-tied-hisham-abugharbieh-hillsborough-county-sheriffs-office-murders\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">identify the remains<\/a> as Bristy. Her family was notified the same day.<\/p>\n<p>While the recovery efforts were ongoing, deputies responded <a href=\"https:\/\/cbs12.com\/news\/local\/officials-plead-for-tips-as-2-usf-students-missing-considered-endangered-florida-news-university-of-south-florida-police-department-missing-tampa-missing-persons\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">April 21<\/a> to a separate domestic violence incident involving Aburghabieh and his family. Believing he could be armed and dangerous, the Hillsborough County Sheriff\u2019s Office activated its SWAT team. After hours of negotiation, Aburghabieh surrendered without incident. He now faces two counts of first-degree premeditated murder, with additional charges possible.<\/p>\n<p>As investigators continued their work, the USF community gathered to mourn. At a prayer service held April 24 in Tampa, Limon\u2019s aunt, Taslima Islam, spoke publicly about the toll her nephew\u2019s death has taken.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere was security?\u201d Islam said. \u201cI am feeling scared now. If I see any persons, or suddenly I\u2019m walking and I see any men, I\u2019m getting scared. I\u2019m not feeling mentally well. (Hillsborough County Sheriff&#8217;s Office)<\/p>\n<p>Chronister said arrangements are being made to return both victims to Bangladesh for burial, honoring their families\u2019 religious wishes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s no version of success anyone would choose here,\u201d Chronister said. \u201cSuccess would have been bringing them home alive. But we will give these families the truth, and we will hold the person responsible fully accountable.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The sheriff urged students and residents to take concerning behavior seriously and report it immediately.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf something doesn\u2019t feel right,\u201d he said, \u201ctrust that instinct and call us.
