{"id":255132,"date":"2026-05-02T08:44:15","date_gmt":"2026-05-02T08:44:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-fl\/255132\/"},"modified":"2026-05-02T08:44:15","modified_gmt":"2026-05-02T08:44:15","slug":"remains-recovered-near-tampa-bay-area-bridge-identified-as-second-missing-usf-student-officials-say","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-fl\/255132\/","title":{"rendered":"Remains recovered near Tampa Bay area bridge identified as second missing USF student, officials say"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>EDITOR\u2019S NOTE:\u00a0This story contains details that are graphic.<\/p>\n<p>TAMPA BAY (CNN) \u2014 The human remains recovered near a Tampa Bay area bridge Sunday have been identified as the second missing University of South Florida doctoral student, Nahida Bristy, Hillsborough County Sheriff Chad Chronister said Friday.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe details of this investigation are gruesome, and the actions of the suspect are nothing short of pure evil,\u201d Chronister said.<\/p>\n<p>Bristy and fellow doctoral student Zamil Limon, both 27 and originally from Bangladesh, were last seen on April 16 in Tampa. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eastidahonews.com\/2026\/04\/roommate-charged-with-2-counts-of-murder-in-death-disappearance-of-2-usf-students\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Limon\u2019s body was found<\/a> on April 24 on the Howard Frankland Bridge.<\/p>\n<p>Two days later, a black trash bag was spotted on the shoreline just south of where Limon was found.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.eastidahonews.com\/2026\/04\/body-found-near-the-florida-bridge-where-body-of-1-of-2-missing-students-was-found-days-earlier\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">RELATED | Body found near the Florida bridge where body of 1 of 2 missing students was found days earlier<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Inside, investigators discovered another set of human remains in an \u201cadvanced stage of decomposition,\u201d according to an arrest affidavit.<\/p>\n<p>The bag was tied in a knot, in the same manner as the one containing Limon\u2019s remains. Investigators also noted the body was wearing \u201csimilar clothing based on the unique style that Nahida Bristy was last seen on video surveillance,\u201d according to the affidavit.<\/p>\n<p>Like Limon, Bristy suffered multiple stab wounds. But the motive for the killings remains unclear. Detectives are \u201canxiously searching for that,\u201d Chronister said.<\/p>\n<p> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-fl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/cnn-tampa-bay-student-murders1.jpg\" class=\"fancybox\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-fl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/cnn-tampa-bay-student-murders1.jpg\" alt=\"Nahida Bristy and Zamil Limon are pictured in a split image.\" width=\"900\" height=\"506\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-833353\"  \/><\/a>Nahida Bristy and Zamil Limon are pictured in a split image. | Nahida Bristy, Facebook and Family of Zamil Limon  <\/p>\n<p>Bristy\u2019s family was overwhelmed with the news, her brother Zahid Pranto told CNN. \u201cPeople should not be going through this kind of situation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The sheriff notified the family hours before the Friday morning news conference that the body was Bristy, Pranto said. Since then, his mother has been crying, and he\u2019s been checking his father\u2019s blood pressure closely.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur internal world is upside down right now,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.eastidahonews.com\/2026\/04\/roommate-charged-with-2-counts-of-murder-in-death-disappearance-of-2-usf-students\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">RELATED | Roommate charged with 2 counts of murder in death, disappearance of 2 USF students<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Limon\u2019s roommate, Hisham Abugharbieh, is in custody and has been charged with two counts of first-degree premeditated murder with a weapon in Limon and Bristy\u2019s deaths. He also faces charges of unlawfully moving a dead body, failure to report a death with intent to conceal, tampering with physical evidence, false imprisonment and battery, in connection with Limon and Bristy\u2019s deaths, the state attorney\u2019s office said.<\/p>\n<p>Abugharbieh, 26, will remain in detention as he awaits trial, a judge ruled Tuesday. Prosecutors had asked that he be held in jail due to the \u201cbrutal and violent nature\u201d of the alleged crimes.<\/p>\n<p>A medical examiner\u2019s report said Limon suffered a deep stab wound to his lower back that penetrated his liver, among other wounds, according to court documents filed in Hillsborough County Court.<\/p>\n<p>In addition to several stab wounds, Limon \u201cwas bound in front at his hands and at his ankles,\u201d Chronister said. \u201cHis legs up towards his buttocks area was almost completely severed so he could be bent together \u2026 (making) it easier to place in a trash bag. He was left on the side of the road. As gruesome as this murder was, he was literally left on the side of the highway like a piece of trash.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Investigators had called Bristy\u2019s family in Bangladesh last week to say they believed she may be dead, based on the amount of blood found in the apartment Limon shared with the suspect, Bristy\u2019s brother told <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wtsp.com\/article\/news\/local\/hillsboroughcounty\/police-investigation-lake-forest-usf-tampa\/67-8dcd9466-dd00-4836-ac06-9f3aee39e510\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">CNN affiliate WTSP.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Bristy\u2019s family is working with the Bangladesh embassy to get her body back \u201cas soon as possible,\u201d Pranto said.<\/p>\n<p> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-fl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/AP26115572959256.jpeg\" class=\"fancybox\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-fl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/AP26115572959256.jpeg\" alt=\"Hisham Abugharbieh, facing two counts of first-degree murder appears in court via video on Saturday, April 25, 2026 in Tampa, Fla. \" width=\"900\" height=\"489\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-833349\"  \/><\/a>Hisham Abugharbieh, facing two counts of first-degree murder appears in court via video on April 25 in Tampa, Fla. | WFTS-TV via Associated Press  <\/p>\n<p>Abugharbieh was arrested the morning of April 24 at a home in Lutz, Florida, after law enforcement responded to a domestic violence incident involving a family member, the sheriff\u2019s office said.<\/p>\n<p>Bristy was a doctoral student of chemical engineering at USF. She had a master\u2019s of engineering from the Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology and a bachelor\u2019s of science in applied chemistry and chemical engineering from the Noakhali Science and Technology University in Bangladesh, according to her <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/nahidabristy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">LinkedIn profile<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Bristy\u2019s dream \u201cwas to come back to Bangladesh, work here, do something big and contribute to society,\u201d Pranto told CNN Monday. \u201cShe was the perfect sister. She was the perfect daughter of her family.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Bristy and Limon \u201cwere exemplary students, building lives, creating community and contributing to our university in meaningful ways,\u201d University of South Florida President Moez Limayem said in a statement today. The university is working with authorities in their investigation, he added.<\/p>\n<p>Professor Mohammad Ismail, the NSTU vice chancellor, also grieved Bristy\u2019s death, saying in a post on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/permalink.php?story_fbid=pfbid0uwKq4EzAcYZRMG8jkqKoo77VAAQemu1nVbeK6kgPp9dVcTPbxFFfKZkuDUKjrGQRl&amp;id=61584044375023&amp;rdid=YjFpCg3fGfxC7d31\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">social media<\/a> that she was a \u201ctalented and promising student.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHer untimely death is an irreparable loss to the university and the nation,\u201d Ismail wrote.<\/p>\n<p>During a USF vigil honoring the two students Friday, professors who worked closely with Bristy and Limon remembered them as bright, kind students who were cornerstones in their academic community.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen I met her \u2026 I saw a student with a quiet smile, a soft-spoken demeanor and enthusiasm to begin her coursework. By every account from her friends, these qualities never left her,\u201d said Vinay Gupta, the chair for USF\u2019s department of chemical, biological and materials engineering.<\/p>\n<p>Shortly after Bristy\u2019s remains were publicly identified, Limon\u2019s family said they hope the young woman\u2019s loved ones \u201cmay find some measure of peace after receiving this confirmation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The gruesome killings of two students who traveled halfway around the world for higher education \u201ccontradicts everything what Florida and the United States stands for,\u201d the sheriff said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPeople come here because everything is better here than in anywhere else in the world.
