This was their quickest defeat yet (2 hours, 3 minutes).

“When you’re in the league long enough, my sense and my knowledge since being around these guys is they’re very good at turning the page and understanding there’s a length of the season,” Vitello told reporters, as broadcast on NBC Sports Bay Area’s postgame show. “You can’t freak out about this or that.”

The Giants (13-19) weren’t exactly close to scoring Friday night, three nights after a 7-0 loss opened a cruel three-game sweep in Philadelphia, where the Giants twice blew ninth-inning leads in Thursday’s crushing doubleheader.

Upon slinking south to Tampa, the Giants fell to 2-7 against a left-handed starter, with Shane McClanahan allowing no runs on five hits with no walks and five strikeouts through six innings.

The Giants’ potential runs that got away:

Luis Arraez got thrown out in the fourth inning trying to stretch a double into a triple.
Jerar Encarnacion stifled a fifth-inning rally with a double-play groundout, after Rafael Devers reached on a leadoff single and took third on a Jung Hoo Lee single.
Patrick Bailey opened the sixth with a single to left, promptly followed by a Heliot Ramos’ double-play grounder back to Rays starter McClanahan.

Giants starter Robbie Ray mirrored McClanahan in striking out five and walking none through 6 1/3 innings, but the Rays did score three runs off him, two via the long ball.

Ray yielded leadoff home runs to Yandy Diaz and Junior Caminero in the second and fourth innings, respectively. The Giants fell behind 3-0 in the sixth once No. 9-hitter Taylor Walls led off with a double, stole third (on Bailey’s initial pick-off throw to second), and scored on a Chandler Simpson flyout.

“I always say solo homers don’t usually beat you,” Ray told reporters, as broadcast on NBC Sports Bay Area. “First one, probably just elevated a bit, he was able to backspin it, I didn’t think it was going to make it out, but it did. Then the second one, I challenged a good hitter, a 3-2 count, fastball, best pitch, and he was just ready for it. For the most part I can live with that.”

Diaz hit an opposite-field shot into the first row of the left-field seats on a 92.5-mph fastball. Caminero hit a no-doubt, 432-foot blast on a 93.8-mph fastball to lead off the Rays’ half of the fourth, for a 2-0 lead.

Ray had allowed only five home runs in six previous starts, including two in an April 14 loss at Cincinnati. Although he entered with a strong 2.70 ERA, the Giants have scored just one or no runs in four of his seven outings, including three shutout losses.

“It’s one of those things where it’s magnified when we’re not hitting as well,” Ray added. “We have to come back tomorrow and get after it.”

Devers delivered a leadoff hit of his own Friday. Mind you, it wasn’t a home run – he last hit one April 8 – but he battled through a nine-pitch at-bat to scorch a 107-mph single up the middle in the fifth; Devers went 1-for-10 in the three-game sweep to the Phillies. After Adames struck out (on a so-close replay challenge), Jung Hoo Lee singled, but then came a rally-killing, 5-4-3 double-play groundout by Encarnacion.

Another leadoff single was wasted the next inning, as Bailey’s was followed by an Ramos’ double-play groundout to McClanahan.

The only other season in which the Giants got shut out more through 32 games was 1976 (eight). They have lost five straight on the road and are now 6-10 away from Oracle Park, 1-6 in interleague play.

The Rays, second in the AL East, have swept three opponents this season, including the first-place Yankees.

Make that a Major League-leading seven shutout losses just 32 games into the Giants’ baptism under manager Tony…

[10
111052,111053,9635,114,3817,22676,110,135,137,136
post-255323","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-tampa","tag-giants-alert","tag-giants-hq","tag-inside-sports","tag-latest-headlines","tag-mlb","tag-san-francisco-giants","tag-sports","tag-tampa","tag-tampa-headlines","tag-tampa-news
["GET
