“In moments like this, what defines us isn’t only how we grieve, but how we stand together,” USF president Moez Limayem said at a vigil on Friday.

Cheerful, kind and humble — that’s just a few words Zamil and Nahida’s friends used to describe them.

“He wanted to change the community,” one of Zamil’s friends told 10 Tampa Bay News.

Zamil and Nahida were both doctoral students from Bangladesh, and those who knew them said they made a genuine effort to be part of the community.

“[Nahida] was supposed to perform with me as part of the chorus and also solo. When I called her the week before for her track, I found that the telephone call was directly going to her voice message,” Mohammed Uddin with the Intercultural Preforming Arts and Heritage Group said.

Hillsborough County Sheriff Chad Chronister said the details of Zamil and Nahida’s death are gruesome, adding that it took several agencies to help arrest Hisham Aburgharbeih, Zamil’s roommate, and charge him with first-degree murder for both students.

“He was nonreactive. He was callous and showed zero emotion even when we confronted him with information that we had. He evoked and didn’t want to answer any more questions that we had,” Chronister said.

Chronister described the suspect’s actions as “pure evil and calculated.” Days before Zamil and Nahida went missing, the sheriff said Aburgharbeih asked ChatGPT questions like, “What happens if a human is put in a garbage bag and thrown in a dumpster?”

“I think it should be no different than on META, Facebook and everything else — they find something disturbing, they notify us,” Chronister said.

“They will be a constant reminder to me — my entire leadership team — that nothing is more important than the safety, dignity and well-being of our students,” Limayem said.

Chronister said his team is actively working to return Zamil and Nahida’s remains to their families in Bangladesh. He also said this is still an ongoing investigation.
