MIAMI \u2014 Anger and grief were laid bare in a Miami courtroom on Tuesday as loved ones of 17-year-old Yakheim Lollar begged a judge to sentence his killer, Jahara Malik, to the max.<\/p>\n
Malik, 18, pleaded guilty<\/a> to manslaughter in the death<\/a> of Lollar, her ex-boyfriend, in March.<\/p>\n Lollar\u2019s family had asked for a 30-year sentence. The judge ended up giving her 17 years behind bars, with seven years of probation.<\/p>\n \u201cI\u2019m standing up and honor my son and defend my son,\u201d Darveed Lollar, Yakheim Lollar\u2019s father, said. \u201cI just wanted to be heard. Man, I don\u2019t like the way this case was handled.\u201d<\/p>\n It happened on Dec. 20, 2024 at the apartment building where Lollar lived in the 6100 block of Northwest Sixth Court, in Miami\u2019s Liberty City neighborhood.<\/p>\n Malik told police the stabbing was an accident \u2014 a deadly, unintended result of horseplay.<\/p>\n \u201cIt will always be a fact that you are a murderer,\u201d Zeldrina Beecham, Lollar\u2019s aunt, told Malik. \u201cYou are a demon seed that your parents brought into this world to bring suffering on everybody else. Shame on them.\u201d<\/p>\n Nathalie Jean, Lollar\u2019s mother, said, \u201cWe just want what my son deserved.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cHis life matters. I do not want to leave here today, your honor, feeling like I lost my son all over again,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n Prosecutors played surveillance videos in court, showing Lollar\u2019s final moments after Malik stabbed him in the chest with a pocket knife. <\/p>\n \u201cIt went into the third rib on the left side, approximately one inch in depth and hit the heart,\u201d Miami Police Department Sgt. Juan Santos testified.<\/p>\n The sights and sounds were so distressing, some fled the courtroom.<\/p>\n Prosecutors had recommended 20 years of prison with 10 years probation. <\/p>\n Meanwhile, Malik\u2019s attorneys said she was remorseful and they wanted her sentenced as a youthful offender to a boot camp program.<\/p>\n Malik apologized in court Tuesday.<\/p>\n \u201cI was wrong for what I did, and every day I sit and think about the damage I caused,\u201d she said. \u201cThe family wants me in prison, but I\u2019m in my own prison for the rest of my life. I wish I can go back and change what happened, but I can\u2019, and that\u2019s the worst part.
