PLANTATION, Fla. \u2014 Residents in a Plantation neighborhood say they\u2019ve been the victims of mail theft for several years. <\/p>\n
Those residents of the Plantation Trace development, located along the 700 block of 132nd Avenue, are upset because they say the U.S. Postal Service isn\u2019t doing anything about it. <\/p>\n
Recently, under the cover of night, security cameras captured a car reversing into a parking space next to a row of mailboxes. Seconds later, a pair of hooded subjects emerged.<\/p>\n
It\u2019s clear the crooks were able to gain access to the mailbox quickly before getting away with mail belonging to the residents. <\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s a little intrusive,\u201d said resident Alex Ruane. \u201cThe first time we got something materialistic stolen but then we started hearing credit cards coming up in people\u2019s names and IRS papers and things like that. It\u2019s a little bit of a scary feeling.\u201d<\/p>\n
Ruane is one of many residents inside the development who have fallen victim to this crime, a cycle that\u2019s been repeated five times over the past two years.<\/p>\n
\u201cWhat\u2019s the resolution? There isn\u2019t one, so we ended up spending HOA funds to put up cameras, license plate readers, and that\u2019s how we caught the car the last time it happened,\u201d said Ruane. <\/p>\n
Carli Pierson is the attorney representing the Plantation Trace Homeowners Association. <\/p>\n
\u201cThis is being perpetrated by an organized criminal enterprise,\u201d said Pierson. \u201cThey move quickly and they clearly have access to some kind of a master key.\u201d<\/p>\n
Pierson has helped to guide property owners on how to properly report the thefts with police and the U.S. Postal Inspector, but every effort to curb the crime so far has hit a wall.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe can\u2019t change the locks on the mailboxes ourselves because that\u2019s tampering, which is a federal offense, and the postal service won\u2019t tell the community when they\u2019re gonna change the locks, so they\u2019re just sitting there Ike a sitting duck.,\u201d said Pierson.<\/p>\n
Residents are hoping the video of this latest heist will help bring the crooks to justice. <\/p>\n
\u201cI don\u2019t wanna ship things to my house,\u201d said Ruane. \u201cIf I\u2019m gonna buy something, am I gonna send it somewhere else? Am I gonna send it to my husband\u2019s business or my parents\u2019 house, where I don\u2019t have to worry about it getting stolen?\u201d<\/p>\n
