MIAMI (WSVN) – A teenager has been sentenced to over a decade behind bars after pleading guilty to fatally stabbing her boyfriend.<\/p>\n
Emotions ran high in a Miami courtroom as 18-year-old Jahara Malik learned how many years she would spend in jail after she pled guilty to manslaughter.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe court sentences you to 17 years in Florida state prison followed by five years of reported probation,\u201d said Miami-Dade Circuit Court Judge Christine Hernandez.<\/p>\n
Family members of 17-year-old Yahkeim Lollar, who Malik fatally stabbed in December of 2024<\/a>, were overcome by emotion after their yearslong fight for justice.<\/p>\n \u201cMy son can finally rest in peace knowing that justice was served,\u201d said Nathalie Jean, Lollar\u2019s mother.<\/p>\n Prior to the judge\u2019s decision, Lollar\u2019s loved ones packed the courtroom and connecting hallway during Tuesday\u2019s hearing.<\/p>\n Some of his loved ones needed to step out of the room after becoming overwhelmed by emotions during the sentencing hearing.<\/p>\n At one point, Malik held back tears as surveillance video showed the moments she fatally stabbed Lollar.<\/p>\n \u201cYou can hear the victim saying at some point: \u2018Jahara, don\u2019t,’\u201d said Miami Police Sergeant Juan Santos.<\/p>\n Lollar was a football player for Miami Northwestern Senior High School.<\/p>\n Santos, one of the detectives who responded to the 2024 call, was among those who testified before the court.<\/p>\n The knife used by Malik in the stabbing was also shown to the court.<\/p>\n
