TALLAHASSEE, Fla. \u2013 With the recent crackdowns on illegal immigration<\/a> in Florida, it\u2019s a good reminder that some out-of-state licenses are no longer legal in the Sunshine State.<\/p>\n

That\u2019s because of a 2023 state law (SB 1718<\/a>), which prohibits the issuance of driver\u2019s licenses to those who don\u2019t have proof of lawful residence in the U.S.<\/p>\n

The legislation also specifies that out-of-state driver\u2019s licenses that are issued exclusively to illegal immigrants are invalid in Florida.<\/p>\n

The Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles<\/a> states that certain classes of license may be invalid in Florida if presented by a driver who isn\u2019t in the U.S. legally. That list is as follows:<\/p>\n

\u201cFederal Limits Apply\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cNot Valid for Federal Identification, Voting or Public Benefit Purposes.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cLimited Purpose Driver\u2019s License\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cLimited Purpose Instruction Permit\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cLimited Purpose Provisional Driver\u2019s License\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cNot Valid for use for official Federal purposes\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cNot for Federal Identification\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cDriver Privilege Card\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cDriver Privilege Permit\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cNot for REAL ID Purposes Driver\u2019s Privilege Card\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cNot for REAL ID Purposes Junior Driver\u2019s Privilege Card\u201d<\/p>\n

Anyone who presents one of the listed licenses during a traffic stop may be subject to penalties, legislative analysts explained<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The determinations were made in accordance with Florida laws, which states: \u201cIf a driver license is of a class of licenses issued by another state exclusively to undocumented immigrants who are unable to prove lawful presence in the United States when the licenses are issued, the driver license, or other permit…is invalid in this state and does not authorize the holder to operate a motor vehicle in this state.\u201d<\/p>\n

Visitors from Connecticut and Delaware traveling on Florida roads will be pulled over so their license can be checked for immigration status\/valid driver license.Visitors from Connecticut and Delaware are welcome in Floridaand will not be pulled over simply for having out-of-state plates.
