A South Florida woman says her neighbor\u2019s home exercise classes grew so large that they blocked the street. When she couldn\u2019t get out of her driveway to get to work, she called Help Me Howard with Brandon Beyer.<\/p>\n
A native of Australia, Ruthy Fredericks said she moved to South Florida because it reminds her of her home down under.<\/p>\n
Ruthy Fredericks: \u201cI was drawn to Miami by the beautiful weather. It\u2019s very much like Australia with the beautiful water and beaches.\u201d<\/p>\n
And as a commercial airline pilot, she wanted a home in a quiet neighborhood so she could relax and rest.<\/p>\n
Ruthy Fredericks: \u201cI fly a lot of overnighters so it\u2019s nice to come home to a quiet home where I can sleep during the day.\u201d<\/p>\n
But lately \u2013 that has been tricky. Because one of her neighbors on Northeast 81st Street in Miami turned the home he rents into a gathering place for people to exercise.<\/p>\n
Ruthy Fredericks: \u201cAnd it\u2019s attracted a big following of people that go to their home and they park all their cars all the way up our street and the cul-de-sac, blocking us in in the morning.\u201d<\/p>\n
Ruthy said cars are blocking driveways on most days. And, one day it was so bad \u2013 she couldn\u2019t get to work.<\/p>\n
Ruthy Fredericks: \u201cI had to Uber because I couldn\u2019t get out of my driveway.\u201d<\/p>\n
And if that\u2019s not bad enough \u2013 she says it\u2019s also loud.<\/p>\n
Ruthy Fredericks: \u201cThey have loud, thumping music, which is also part of Miami, wonderful to enjoy Miami, but not in the early hours of the morning and not when it\u2019s waking up your neighbors.\u201d<\/p>\n
She feels like the quiet peaceful neighborhood they have grown to love is all but gone.<\/p>\n
Ruthy Fredericks: \u201cYou want to go outside and read book and have a cup of coffee in the morning, read the newspaper quietly, and all you hear is boom, boom, boom, boom. It\u2019s really unacceptable.\u201d<\/p>\n
Ruthy said she\u2019s all for exercise \u2013 just not at the expense of others.<\/p>\n
Ruthy Fredericks: \u201cI have nothing against fitness. I love that, I think it\u2019s wonderful and it\u2019s all part of being in Miami, but it\u2019s just not appropriate to disturb your neighbors.\u201d<\/p>\n
After she called everyone she could think of\u2026<\/p>\n
Ruthy Fredericks: \u201cWe have called code enforcement, we\u2019ve called the police, we\u2019ve called the Miami Parking Authority and nothing seems to be done about it.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u2026That\u2019s when Ruthy called us.<\/p>\n
Ruthy Fredericks: \u201cWe\u2019re at our wits end. We don\u2019t know who else to call to help us.\u201d<\/p>\n
Howard, there\u2019s no place like Miami to work up a good sweat \u2014 but can you muscle right past your neighbors to do so?<\/p>\n
Howard Finkelstein: \u201cNo. Most cities have laws that regulate how and where you can park, and a homeowner can tow a car that is parked on their property. If it\u2019s parked on the street and blocking your driveway, call the police.\u201d<\/p>\n
We reached out to police and they told us they launched a two week observation plan.<\/p>\n
After a couple of days issuing warnings \u2013 the problem was fixed.<\/p>\n
Ruthy and her neighbors \u2013 have their street back.<\/p>\n
Ruthy Fredericks: \u201cThe city must\u2019ve taken some action because it\u2019s been absolutely terrific. We have our quiet cul-de-sac back.\u201d<\/p>\n
When Ruthy called, we ran right over. Happy to help.<\/p>\n
