PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. (CBS12) \u2014 A former corrections officer’s<\/a> desperate bid to resolve financial troubles has led to her arrest for an alleged brazen armed robbery at a Port St. Lucie bank in June of 2025<\/a>, unraveling a complex investigation filled with unexpected twists and a confession.<\/p>\n

Port St. Lucie Police<\/a> Chief Niemczyk detailed the complexities of the investigation in a news conference Thursday morning, explaining that the police had recognized the suspect, identified as Mary Adolphus, early on but faced numerous challenges. <\/p>\n

Officials said that the case was complicated due to an influx of tips from the public, which led to several potential suspects, creating an intricate web of circumstantial evidence. <\/p>\n

“Proving who it wasn\u2019t was just as important as proving who it was,” Niemczyk stated, highlighting the difficulties in sorting through various leads and suspect descriptions.<\/p>\n

One significant hurdle for the investigators was Adolphus’s vehicle. Though she was local, the car used during the robbery did not show up on any license plate readers, making it challenging to trace her movements, Niemczyk said.<\/p>\n

Chief Niemczyk emphasized the need for thorough canvassing and research, which allowed detectives to build a timeline that placed her in the vicinity of the bank around the time of the robbery. This included tracking her visits to two other banks and a Sam’s Club across the street before the incident.<\/p>\n

The investigation progressed further when law enforcement conducted several traffic stops involving the suspect. In reviewing body camera footage from these encounters, detectives noted that she was wearing clothes similar to those seen in bank surveillance images. Niemczyk said this evidence helped solidify her as a primary suspect.<\/p>\n

Complicating matters, Adolphus allegedly left the country multiple times during the course of the investigation, traveling to Jamaica and later attempting to flee to the Dominican Republic. <\/p>\n

Investigators said Adolphus was ultimately stopped at Miami International Airport as detectives worked to bring her back to conduct an in-person interview.<\/p>\n

However, authorities coordinated with the FBI to monitor her movements overseas. Eventually, the detectives managed to conduct an interview, which they said led to a confession.<\/p>\n

Niemczyk noted that the suspect had no significant criminal background, having previously worked as a corrections officer for nearly five years at the state prison system, specifically at MCI. However, her employment ended in 2023 due to some form of misconduct, which the chief did not elaborate on.<\/p>\n

Financial difficulties appeared to be the motive behind the robbery, with sources indicating the need for money to pay rent, Niemczyk said.<\/p>\n

Chief Niemczyk confirmed that the incident represented the first bank robbery within Port St. Lucie’s city limits since 2023, in a trend where bank thefts have been decreasing overall. <\/p>\n

“It’s a crime with extremely high risk and low reward,” he commented, noting that suspects typically get away with less than a few thousand dollars and are often apprehended quickly.<\/p>\n

A judge set Adolphus\u2019 bond at $55,000 during her first appearance Thursday morning.<\/p>\n

The judge also ordered her to surrender her passport before posting bond, citing probable cause documents that allege she attempted to flee the country during the investigation.<\/p>\n

Adolphus asked the court to lower the bond amount, arguing this is her first offense. However, the judge said the nature of the charges and concerns about ensuring she appears for future court hearings justified the bond amount.<\/p>\n

The judge added that Adolphus\u2019 attorney could file a motion to reduce bond with the judge assigned to the case after further reviewing the investigation.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"PORT ST.
