The New York Times first reported that DeSantis’ office is in talks with the federal government on shutting it down. “Our goal was for it to be a bridge to DHS being able to do it themselves. … They should be the ones ideally to simply hold, process, and repatriate to their own countries.”The report by The Times claims the facility has cost the state hundreds of millions of dollars.As he took questions during the news conference, the governor said he expects to be reimbursed by the federal government.The immigration detention center opened last summer in the Everglades amid community backlash and lawsuits from environmentalists.
