A PLATFORM USED BY SCHOOL SYSTEMS ACROSS THE COUNTRY HAS BECOME THE VICTIM OF A CYBER ATTACK. CANVAS IS A POPULAR CLOUD BASED DIGITAL HUB FOR CLASSROOMS. JASON GUY IN THE STUDIO NOW. JASON. A COUPLE OF OUR LOCAL DISTRICTS HAVE SAID THEY\u2019VE JUST SHUT DOWN THE APP FOR NOW. THAT\u2019S CERTAINLY CONCERNING NEWS FOR PARENTS. BOTH THE ORANGE COUNTY AND BREVARD COUNTY PUBLIC SCHOOL DISTRICTS ARE TELLING FAMILIES THEY\u2019VE TEMPORARILY DISABLED ACCESS TO CANVAS. IT\u2019S JUST TO BE ON THE SAFE SIDE. CPS SAYS THEY\u2019LL BE RESTORING THE ICON ONCE THEY VERIFY THE SYSTEM HAS BEEN STABILIZED. SCHOOLS IN SEMINOLE, MARION AND OSCEOLA COUNTIES ARE ALSO CONFIRMING THEY USE THE CANVAS APP. THEY ALL SAY THEIR SECURITY TEAMS ARE ON TOP OF THIS. THE COMPANY THAT RUNS CANVAS SAYS INFORMATION LIKE NAMES, EMAIL ADDRESSES, AND STUDENT ID NUMBERS MAY HAVE BEEN COMPROMISED. SOME PRIVATE MESSAGES SENT ON THE PLATFORM COULD HAVE ALSO BEEN ACCESSED, CANVAS SAYS. AT THIS POINT, IT DOES NOT THINK ANY PASSWORDS. SOCIAL SECURITY NUMBERS, BIRTHDAYS OR FINANCIAL INFORMATION WAS IMPACTED. SOME COLLEGES ALSO USE THE PLATFORM. USF SAID THEY ARE MONITORING THE SITUATION AND WORKING WITH LAW ENFORCEMENT TO ASSESS IMPACTS TO THE UNIVERSITY\u2019S DATA. AS OF THIS MORNING.
