(WCTV\/Florida Capital Bureau) &#8211; The state of Florida is getting ready for a world without pennies.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wctv.tv\/2026\/02\/27\/florida-lawmakers-prepare-penniless-society-with-new-bill-requires-cash-transactions-be-rounded-up\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.wctv.tv\/2026\/02\/27\/florida-lawmakers-prepare-penniless-society-with-new-bill-requires-cash-transactions-be-rounded-up\/\">bill<\/a> on Governor Ron DeSantis\u2019s desk outlines when stores need to round up or down any cash transaction to the nearest nickel.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">Last year, the U.S. mint stopped producing pennies but they are still circulating. <\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">Lorena Holley, the vice president of the Florida Retail Federation, said that this legislation will clear up any confusion between consumers and businesses.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text text-center\">Florida Politics:<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">\u201cSurprisingly, a lot of consumers still like to use pennies, and again, like I said, we\u2019ve seen a reduction in the penny and that is happening nationwide. Florida is one of the states leading the guidance but this is happening all over the country,\u201c Holley said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">These changes would not apply to card or digital transactions. <\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">The governor has until next Friday to sign the bill. <\/p>\n<p>Copyright 2026 WCTV.
