The Cape Coral Friends of Wildlife invites the community to attend its next General Meeting Tuesday, May 12, at 7 p.m., at Rotary Park, located at 5505 Rose Garden Road, in Cape Coral.<\/p>\n
Doors will open at 6:30 p.m. for networking and refreshments. The featured presentation will begin at 7 p.m. and will be followed by CCFW\u2019s general business meeting.<\/p>\n
The evening\u2019s program, \u201cPreventing Bird-Window Collisions,\u201d will be presented by Gerri Reaves, Ph.D., president of Audubon of Southwest Florida.<\/p>\n
South Florida is home to a rich diversity of bird species, both migratory and resident. Birds not only inspire us but also provide vital ecological services such as insect control and pollination. However, studies estimate that more than 2 billion birds die each year in the United States due to collisions with glass.<\/p>\n
Reaves will explain why these collisions occur and highlight practical, effective solutions. From simple do-it-yourself fixes for homeowners to innovative bird-friendly building designs used in major facilities worldwide, there are many ways individuals and communities can make a difference.<\/p>\n
\u201cEven one person can help prevent bird-window collisions,\u201d said Reaves. \u201cThis program will show how small changes can have a meaningful impact on bird conservation.\u201d<\/p>\n
Reaves is also a local historian and a member of the Fort Myers Environmental Advisory Board. She has authored hundreds of articles on local history and Florida\u2019s plant life, as well as three books, including works on local history and American autobiography. Her work focuses on addressing environmental hazards created by the built environment, particularly those affecting birds.<\/p>\n
This free program is open to the public and is ideal for nature enthusiasts, homeowners, and anyone interested in protecting local wildlife. All are welcome. <\/p>\n
