Cape Coral City Council approved an amendment of the future land use map to provide additional light industrial property.<\/p>\n
The amendment includes multiple city-owned properties along Kismet Parkway East \u2014 1009-1303 Kismet Parkway East. The change is for current future land use classification from mixed-use to industrial \u2014 approximately 28.40 acres, and natural resources\/preserve land sitting at approximately 41.59 acres.<\/p>\n
Senior Planner Anthony Santora said a rezoning amendment will follow the Wednesday night approval, as the industrial and preservation change must align with the future land map with rezoning.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe are looking at 70 acres of site split between industrial park extension and preservation area. The intent of industrial is to provide for future development opportunities,\u201d he said. \u201cCape Coral has limited industrial space. When we have opportunities to expand and bring in additional tax revenue, we want to explore opportunities and do so where they make the most sense.\u201d<\/p>\n
Councilmember Jennifer Nelson-Lastra said she supported the change because the city has limited industrial, as well as where it is located and the proximity away from homes.<\/p>\n
Councilmembers Rachel Kaduk and Keith Long voted against the change.<\/p>\n
There was mention from residents that currently there is mulching taking place from extreme demolition, all day, six days a week of concrete and wood. They were concerned if the zoning changed to light industrial they would be faced with more of what they are already experiencing.<\/p>\n
Kaduk said she hears the beeping and sees the mulch.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt is a concern. We are trying to do the right thing. This is in my district, and for that reason I will be voting no,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
Long voted against the motion because it is the same site that is subject to two confidential proposals.<\/p>\n
\u201cThat is the reasons for my denial,\u201d he said of his discomfort. \u201cI am going to vote no on this one.\u201d<\/p>\n
