MIAMI (WSVN) – On Saturday evening, a possible boat explosion occurred near the Haulover Sandbar in Miami-Dade, leaving more than a dozen people to be rescued. <\/p>\n
\u201cMy buddy who\u2019s a fisherman was going by, and he said he just heard a boom,\u201d said witness Patrick Lee. <\/p>\n
Witnesses on the scene described the incident. <\/p>\n
\u201cThat\u2019s a pretty bad scene,\u201d said a nearby witness. <\/p>\n
The boat blast drew the attention of nearby witnesses. <\/p>\n
\u201cWhen we looked back out, we saw three people flying off the boat and a puff of smoke,\u201d said Lee.<\/p>\n
Miami-Dade Fire Rescue was called just after 12:45 p.m. Saturday.<\/p>\n
\u201cA possible boat explosion, multiple people in the water,\u201d said the police radio. <\/p>\n
Lee, who works at a commercial slip in Haulover Marina, shared what he saw in the moments leading up to the explosion. <\/p>\n
\u201cAs people got on board, and he turned the key, and didn\u2019t open the hatches, and didn\u2019t turn on the blowers, and he blew people out of the boat,\u201d said Lee. <\/p>\n
When Miami-Dade Fire Rescue arrived on the scene, they found 15 patients.<\/p>\n
Due to the severity of the number of people needing treatment and the need for additional resources, the call was upgraded to a level two mass casualty incident.<\/p>\n
\u201cVery, very, very chaotic, they were trying to figure out if people were still in the water,\u201d said a nearby witness. <\/p>\n
Police radio signaled a possible injury.<\/p>\n
\u201cA possible burn injury,\u201d said the police radio. <\/p>\n
Multiple ambulances pulled into Ryder Trauma Center as 11 people were rushed in for treatment. <\/p>\n
\u201cI just saw a lot of them with burns all over them,\u201d said Lee.<\/p>\n
At Haulover Marina, Miami-Dade Fire Rescue, the US Coast Guard, and FWC were on scene as they worked to piece together what occurred. <\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s obvious he didn\u2019t do what procedures are called for, and many rookie captains don\u2019t,\u201d said Lee. <\/p>\n
FWC said this is an active investigation.<\/p>\n
Officials have not yet said what the update is for those people who were taken to the hospital. <\/p>\n
