Tampa General Hospital<\/a> put a number on its community footprint at this week\u2019s annual State of the Union: $289 million.<\/p>\n

President and CEO John Couris unveiled the figure before a downtown Tampa crowd that included U.S. Rep. Laurel Lee, Tampa Mayor Jane Castor, state Reps. Diane Hart and Josie Tomkow\u00a0and newly elected Sen. Brian Nathan. Most of that impact, Couris said, comes from TGH\u2019s role as a safety net hospital.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe can never forget that we were built by the people, for the people,\u201d Couris said. \u201cOur city, our county and our state have been with us every step of the way in this journey. We take that seriously, we don\u2019t forget about it, and we see ourselves as good partners and collaborator. This number represents that type of work.\u201d<\/p>\n

The event leaned heavily on TGH\u2019s partnership with the University of South Florida, which dates back to the 1970 opening of the USF medical school. Three USF Presidents \u2014 current President Moez Limayem, predecessor Rhea Law, and former leader Judy Genshaft \u2014 appeared on the program. The TGH-USF Health Morsani College of Medicine<\/a> collaboration trains more than 700 residents and fellows across 70-plus specialties.<\/p>\n

Limayem framed his ambition for USF as a leap from \u201crookie AAU university\u201d status to a model institution for the AI era \u2014 and pointed to the hospital partnership as the template.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe model for a great partnership between USF, USF Health and Tampa General. It is a model for all others to come and see how we do things,\u201d Limayem said.<\/p>\n

Couris also walked through the system\u2019s expansion. TGH has grown from 17 locations in 2017 to 150 today, fueled by a partnership with Mass General Brigham<\/a> for outpatient care on the East Coast, the acquisition of DeSoto Memorial Hospital in Arcadia<\/a>, and a new tie-up with Gastro Florida.<\/p>\n

A physician panel featuring Dr. Yael Bensoussan, Dr. Samip Vasaiwala, and Dr. Andrew Abadeer closed out the night with a look at where the clinical work is heading. Abadeer, who works on bio-ionic technology for damaged extremities, drew the most attention with a description of how reconstructive surgery has to be tailored to the patient on the table \u2014 a piano player needing finger dexterity calls for a different surgical plan than a carpenter needing arm strength.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat we\u2019ve seen is patients flown in from all over the state with devastating trauma to their extremities. This is involving arteries, nerves, veins, bones \u2013 you name it. They are coming to us with completely nonfunctional extremities,\u201d Abadeer said. \u201cOnce we stabilize the patient and the limb, then we can switch gears a little bit. We can stop thinking about the salvage spectrum and can instead think about the reconstructive spectrum. Who is this patient? What do they do for a living?
