Island students recently took part in a performance trip to celebrate America\u2019s 250th anniversary.<\/p>\n

The Sanibel School\u2019s Seahorse Chorale traveled to Boston, Massachusetts, and New York City, New York, from April 18-22 to perform at iconic historical venues as part of a national concert series.<\/p>\n

Music Director Joey Giangreco reported that the travel company the school worked with on several recent trips, including performances by the students at Carnegie Hall and the Grand Ole Opry, is sponsoring 250 concerts for 250 groups this school year at various cities for a \u201c250 Concerts\u201d series.<\/p>\n

He continued that they submitted an application and then auditioned.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe were lucky enough to be accepted to perform in two cities,\u201d Giangreco said.<\/p>\n

\u201cOur performances were in celebration of the 250th of the United States of America,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n

Fifteen students with the Seahorse Chorale \u2014 an elective class at the school for grades 6-8 \u2014 were able to take part in the performance trip, joined by several parents, family members and siblings.<\/p>\n

\u201cEvery student that wanted to be able to go on the trip was able,\u201d Giangreco said.<\/p>\n

For the program, the group did \u201cA Journey Through Song in America.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWe wanted for our performance to represent the values and themes across American history,\u201d he said, adding that it covered four different areas: songs of adventure, of purpose, of freedom and of hope.<\/p>\n

For songs of adventure, the students sang \u201cCome Sail Away,\u201d \u201cSloop John B\u201d and \u201cSongs of a Disney Sidekick,\u201d which was a medley of \u201cUnder the Sea,\u201d \u201cThe Bare Necessities,\u201d \u201cFriend Like Me,\u201d \u201cHakuna Matata\u201d and \u201cBe Our Guest.\u201d<\/p>\n

For songs of purpose, they performed \u201cHow Can I Keep from Singing?\u201d and \u201cDance,\u201d along with a medley of \u201cDefying Gravity\/Go the Distance.\u201d<\/p>\n

For songs of freedom, the students did \u201cOur America\u201d \u2014 a medley of patriotic songs that included \u201cYankee Doodle,\u201d \u201cThe Yankee Doodle Boy,\u201d \u201cYou\u2019re a Grand Old Flag,\u201d \u201cThis Land Is Your Land\u201d and \u201cGod Bless the USA\u201d \u2014 \u201cO, America!\u201d and \u201cHamilton Highlights,\u201d a medley of \u201cAlexander Hamilton,\u201d \u201cYou\u2019ll Be Back,\u201d \u201cThe Schuyler Sisters,\u201d \u201cWait for It,\u201d \u201cThe Room Where It Happens\u201d and \u201cMy Shot.\u201d<\/p>\n

For songs of hope, they sang \u201cKeep Your Head Up\u201d and \u201cOne Day.\u201d<\/p>\n

On April 19, the students performed at Faneuil Hall in Boston.<\/p>\n

\u201cFaneuil Hall is a very historical building for our country,\u201d Giangreco said, citing the sugar rebellion and American Revolution and where the motto \u201cNo taxation without representation\u201d came from.<\/p>\n

He added that George Washington celebrated the nation\u2019s first birthday at the building.<\/p>\n

On April 22, they performed on top of the One World Trade Center in New York City.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat was truly breathtaking,\u201d Giangreco said, explaining that the backdrop for the students was Manhattan Island and skyscrapers. \u201cTo see that and to hear those songs performed to that.\u201d<\/p>\n

Both concerts featured only the Seahorse Chorale.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe students did an incredible job with each performance,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Giangreco noted that both spaces were acoustically friendly.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe students really enjoyed getting to perform in very unique spaces and very historical spaces that are very important to our country,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

They were also able to showcase their talents to audience members from all over the world.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt was a once-in-lifetime experience to do that,\u201d Giangreco said.<\/p>\n

In addition to the concerts, the students took part in three impromptu performances: two in Central Park \u2014 one on the stage that hosts \u201cGood Morning America\u2019s\u201d Summer Concert Series \u2014 and one in the \u201cTODAY Show\u201d plaza at the Rockefeller Center. They also had the opportunity to do a workshop with two professionals in the field: Charles South, who is starring in \u201cAladdin\u201d on Broadway, and Michael Dansicker, who works with youth on Broadway and TV and in film on their vocals and storytelling.<\/p>\n

\u201cCharles worked with the students to teach them the dance, choreography, for part of the song \u2018Arabian Nights,’\u201d he said. \u201cMichael worked on teaching them the vocals for \u2018Arabian Nights\u2019 and worked with them on developing a character and telling the story of the song.\u201d<\/p>\n

The group also got in some sightseeing.<\/p>\n

In Boston, the students toured the Freedom Trail, which included Bunker Hill and the monument with nearly 300 steps. They saw Paul Revere\u2019s house and some of the Founding Fathers\u2019 gravesites. The group visited the Boston Tea Party Ships & Museum and took part in an interactive experience, tossing tea overboard from a ship. They did an escape room with physical challenges, like obstacle courses.<\/p>\n

In New York City, the students did a dinner sightseeing cruise, getting to view the New York Harbor, Statue of Liberty, Ellis Island, Brooklyn Bridge and Manhattan Bridge. They also toured Central Park, The High Line, Times Square, Rockefeller Center, Saint Patrick\u2019s Cathedral, the World Trade Center area and Greenwich Village. In addition, they got to enjoy \u201cAladdin\u201d performed on a Broadway stage.<\/p>\n

Giangreco noted that South secured the entire group passes for a backstage tour after the show.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat was so kind of Charles to do for us and we are so grateful,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

In order to go on the trip, the students did car washes at Bank of Islands and took part in a pumpkin bread fundraiser, Christmas tree festival and auction, and Putt and Pub fundraiser on Fort Myers Beach, where Mr. Waves Island Bar sponsored a giveback event. The Point Ybel Brewing Company also sponsored a giveback event, and there was a dodge ball tournament at the school, along with the ticket sales and concessions from some of their fall performances.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe did work very had to fundraise for the trip so that way any student that was interested in going was able to attend,\u201d Giangreco said, adding a big thank you to FISH of Sanibel-Captiva for helping to support those families that needed additional financial assistance.<\/p>\n

He reported that he could not be more proud of his students.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey were incredible representatives of The Sanibel School and brought beautiful music to perform,\u201d Giangreco said. \u201cThey really bonded together as a group and made memories that will last a long time.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m thankful for all of the families that were there to support,\u201d he added. \u201cAnd Mrs. (Jennifer) Lusk, our principal, for her incredible support.\u201d<\/p>\n
