{"id":267330,"date":"2026-05-11T23:48:10","date_gmt":"2026-05-11T23:48:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-fl\/267330\/"},"modified":"2026-05-11T23:48:10","modified_gmt":"2026-05-11T23:48:10","slug":"miami-dade-officers-sue-ben-affleck-matt-damon-alleging-false-portrayal-in-netflix-crime-drama","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-fl\/267330\/","title":{"rendered":"Miami-Dade officers sue Ben Affleck, Matt Damon, alleging false portrayal in Netflix crime drama"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Two Miami-Dade County law enforcement officers are suing Ben Affleck and Matt Damon over their Netflix crime drama \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt32642706\/\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener noreferrer nofollow\">The Rip<\/a>,\u201d alleging the film falsely portrays them as corrupt cops.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The complaint alleges the movie defamed the officers by depicting fictional law enforcement characters allegedly inspired by their real-life narcotics investigation.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">While neither plaintiff is identified by name in the film, the lawsuit argues the movie contains enough specific details for viewers to connect the characters to them, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/ew.com\/ben-affleck-matt-damon-sued-by-miami-cops-for-defamation-over-the-rip-movie-11971041\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener noreferrer nofollow\">Entertainment Weekly<\/a>, which first reported on the legal action Saturday.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Officers Jonathan Santana and Jason Smith of the Miami-Dade Sheriff\u2019s Office filed the lawsuit against <a href=\"https:\/\/artistsequity.com\/\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener noreferrer nofollow\">Artists Equity<\/a>, the production company founded by Affleck and Damon. The complaint also names Falco Productions, the actors\u2019 LLC production company.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Released earlier this year on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.netflix.com\/\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener noreferrer nofollow\">Netflix<\/a>, \u201cThe Rip\u201d stars Damon as Lt. Dane Dumars and Affleck as Detective Sgt. J.D. Byrne. The film centers on Miami-Dade officers who uncover $20 million in cartel cash and become entangled in a widening corruption scandal inside the Police Department.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The lawsuit points to a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.miamiherald.com\/news\/local\/crime\/article86621142.html\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener noreferrer nofollow\">June 29, 2016, drug investigation<\/a> in which Smith and Santana participated in the seizure of more than $24 million. Their lawyers argue the movie borrowed \u201cunique, non-generic details\u201d from that case, including the Miami-Dade setting and narcotics-unit backdrop, creating what they describe as a \u201creasonable inference\u201d that the fictional officers are based on the plaintiffs.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The complaint accuses Affleck and Damon of defamation per se, defamation by implication and intentional infliction of emotional distress.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The lawsuit seeks compensatory damages, punitive damages, attorneys fees and a public retraction that would include a more prominent disclaimer attached to the film.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Among the scenes cited in the lawsuit are depictions of officers violating police procedures and one sequence in which Affleck\u2019s character kills a Drug Enforcement Administration agent. Santana and Smith contend the film falsely suggests they engaged in misconduct or improperly benefited from seized drug money.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">After the film\u2019s release, friends and colleagues questioned whether the officers had used confiscated cash to pay for personal expenses, including home improvements, vehicles and private school tuition for their children, the lawsuit claims.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The officers\u2019 lawyers also allege they sent a cease and desist letter to the filmmakers in December 2025 before the movie\u2019s release, demanding changes and warning of allegedly defamatory content.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cThe Rip\u201d debuted on Netflix in January, after which the suit says the defendants called Santana and Smith\u2019s concerns \u201cunfounded\u201d because the movie never explicitly named Smith or Santana.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">This isn\u2019t the first time the film has drawn negative attention from South Florida officials.
