Florida becomes the latest state to codify rounding rules in cash transactions after the U.S. Treasury took the penny out of circulation.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — Florida has become the latest state to enact legislation related to the penny no longer being in circulation after Gov. Ron DeSantis signed a bill into law Monday saying cash purchases will be rounded to the nearest nickel.

DeSantis signed Florida SB 1074 – the One-cent Piece Bill – into law Monday evening.

The law only applies to cash purchases in the state if the penny is no longer in production, and does not alter the final purchase price or the amount of sales tax collected. The law does not affect cashless purchases like credit or debit card, gift card, check, transfer or money order.

In effect, the law influences the amount of change a seller is obligated to give a purchaser. Here’s how that breaks down:

If the final digit of a cash purchase ends in one or two cents, it must be rounded down to zero.If the final digit ends in three or four, it must be rounded up to five.If the final digit ends in six or seven, it must be rounded down to five.If the final digit ends in eight or nine, it must be rounded up to 10.

Final amounts ending in zero or five cents are unaffected.

At least five other states have signed similar legislation since the U.S. Treasury took the penny out of production in late 2025. Florida joins Arizona, Indiana, New Mexico, Tennessee and Utah as states establishing such a framework for cash purchase rounding.

The bill, introduced in the Florida House by Rep. Fiona McFarland, was sponsored in the state Senate by Sen. Don Gaetz, and takes effect immediately.

Florida becomes the latest state to codify rounding rules in cash transactions after the U.S. Treasury took the…

[6
28,30,29
post-268058","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-florida","tag-florida","tag-florida-headlines","tag-florida-news
["GET
