ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (WFLA) \u2013 The redrawn congressional map, pushed and signed by Gov. Ron DeSantis, shows changes for St. Petersburg. At the same time, voting advocacy group Equal Ground Education Foundation is trying to get a judge to prevent the map from making it to the midterms.<\/p>\n
\u201cI don\u2019t know what will happen in the trial court on this current map but we will ultimately win that,\u201d DeSantis said.<\/p>\n
The governor spoke last week during a stop in Lakeland responding to the push to toss out the redrawn congressional map that also shows a split in Tampa. <\/p>\n
\u201cWe will win it. We know what we are doing on this,\u201d DeSantis said.<\/p>\n
The old map shows a large chunk of the City of St. Petersburg sitting in the same congressional district with the City of Tampa under Democratic Rep. Kathy Castor.<\/p>\n
Now, the new map splits St. Pete into two republican leaning districts. The northern part of the city goes to a district that includes the rest of Pinellas County.\u00a0 The southern part goes to a district that includes Manatee, Hardee, and DeSoto counties.<\/p>\n
Genesis Robinson is the executive director of Equal Ground Education Fund.<\/p>\n
These amendments are very clear. They prevent partisan gerrymandering by favoring a political party or favoring an incumbent. It also prevents vote dilution,\u201d Robinson said.<\/p>\n
His group has filed a lawsuit in state court claiming this map violates the voter-approved fair districts amendment. He also said splitting Tampa and St Pete in the redrawn map are examples of vote dilution.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe deeply believe the actions taken by the governor and the legislature among to a constitutional power grab,\u201d Robinson said.<\/p>\n
