{"id":268634,"date":"2026-05-12T22:38:10","date_gmt":"2026-05-12T22:38:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-fl\/268634\/"},"modified":"2026-05-12T22:38:10","modified_gmt":"2026-05-12T22:38:10","slug":"florida-plans-to-close-alligator-alcatraz-report","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-fl\/268634\/","title":{"rendered":"Florida plans to close \u2018Alligator Alcatraz\u2019: Report"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"text text--small text--normal text--primary\">Published:\u00a0May 12, 2026 at 6:10 PM<\/p>\n<p>NYT: DHS officials concluded it\u2019s too expensive<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">COLLIER COUNTY, Fla.  \u2014 Florida is planning to close Alligator Alcatraz, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2026\/05\/12\/us\/florida-alligator-alcatraz-detention-closure.html?smid=nytcore-ios-share\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2026\/05\/12\/us\/florida-alligator-alcatraz-detention-closure.html?smid=nytcore-ios-share\">according to a report from the New York Times<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.local10.com\/topic\/Alligator_Alcatraz\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.local10.com\/topic\/Alligator_Alcatraz\/\">Alligator Alcatraz<\/a> was opened during the summer of 2025 in the heart of the Florida Everglades, built on the tarmac and land surrounding the massive Dade-Collier Training and Transition Airport.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">The center has reportedly cost the state hundreds of millions of dollars. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">According to the NYT report, officials at the Department of Homeland Security have concluded that it is too expensive to keep operating the detention center.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Florida Gov.
