arrested during a teen takeover at Curtis Hixon Park over the weekend.

The department told 10 Tampa Bay News the information was posted in error and once it came to their attention, they corrected it.

A total of 22 people between the ages of 12 and 21 were arrested, and police also seized two weapons. Over the weekend, Tampa police posted a public notice about the arrest, which included the names, ages, race and misdemeanor charges of all involved.

“Their information, according to statute, should never appear, and it should not be a public record disclosure and so forth for young people when they are misdemeanors,” Titania Lamb with Tampa Bay Academy of Hope said.

Under Florida law, that can change in certain felony cases. Tampa Bay Academy of Hope supports young people through development programs while also helping eligible juveniles clear their records and move forward with better opportunities.

Lamb added that although it was removed, the personal information could still be out there.

“The information could still leak out to the public,” she said. “We don’t young people to feel like a mistake or one thing they did defines them.”

Hillsborough NAACP President Yvette Lewis said the teen takeover also underscores the need for better youth activities in neighborhoods.

“There’s no place for them to go. There’s no place for them to be a child, to be a teen,” Lewis said. “Providing those services to young people, it gives them a positive outlet instead of something that may lead to violence — because I don’t think that’s their intent.”

Tampa police will host a “Takeover with a Purpose” event on Friday night, which they say is designed to create a positive and safe alternative for teens while also encouraging community connection.

“We want young people to know that the Tampa Police Department and our community partners are invested in them and their future,” Chief Lee Bercaw wrote in a statement in regards to the event. “This is an opportunity to create positive spaces and outlets for our teens. We are committed to the safety of everyone.”

The event will be taking place 8 p.m. to midnight at the Jackson Heights NFL YET Center.

Tampa police mistakenly released the names and ages of several minors arrested during a teen takeover, but they…

[10
135,137,136
post-268895","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-tampa","tag-tampa","tag-tampa-headlines","tag-tampa-news
["GET
