After more than 21 years leading the Greater SouthShore Chamber of Commerce, Executive Director Melanie Davis is preparing to step down in July, closing a chapter she describes as both meaningful and deeply personal. <\/p>\n

Davis said the moments that left the strongest impression were when the chamber united around community needs. <\/p>\n

\u201cAnytime the chamber came together and went beyond business to truly support our community stands out the most,\u201d she said. \u201cIf our community doesn\u2019t thrive, then our businesses can\u2019t thrive either.\u201d <\/p>\n

About 15 years ago, Davis helped guide a major transition in the chamber\u2019s mission. <\/p>\n

\u201cWe made a conscious shift to become more involved in giving back,\u201d she said. <\/p>\n

The decision wasn\u2019t universally popular at first. <\/p>\n

\u201cWe were even labeled the \u2018dogood chamber,\u2019 and some hesitated to join,\u201d she added. <\/p>\n

But she said the approach eventually became one of the organization\u2019s greatest strengths. <\/p>\n

\u201cOur members now value the opportunity to connect with likeminded businesses while also making a meaningful impact,\u201d she said. <\/p>\n

Leading through change became a defining part of her tenure. Davis said working with a board of directors that rotates every few years required constant adaptability. But nothing compared to the challenge of COVID19. <\/p>\n

\u201cThere was a moment when we came close to closing our doors,\u201d she said. <\/p>\n

Instead, the chamber doubled down on helping businesses survive by connecting them with resources and keeping the community informed. <\/p>\n

\u201cThat experience reinforced the importance of resilience and servicedriven leadership,\u201d Davis said. <\/p>\n

In recent years, the chamber has seen significant growth in engagement. Davis credits that momentum to redefining value after the pandemic. <\/p>\n

\u201cWe leaned into our committees, strengthened member involvement, and focused on building a true sense of community \u2014 almost like a family,\u201d she said. <\/p>\n

Stepping away, she admits, is emotional. <\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s incredibly bittersweet,\u201d Davis said. <\/p>\n

She began the role in her mid20s, raising three daughters while growing alongside the chamber. <\/p>\n

\u201cIt truly feels like an extended family,\u201d Davis said. \u201cI feel like I gained 20 extra grandparents through this journey.\u201d <\/p>\n

What she\u2019ll miss most is working directly with business owners. <\/p>\n

\u201cThere\u2019s almost always a way forward, and I love the creativity that comes with problemsolving,\u201d she said. <\/p>\n

As she prepares for her next chapter, Davis said she looks forward to slowing down. And she is confident in her successor, Bonnie Peacock. <\/p>\n

\u201cShe has experienced the chamber from every angle,\u201d Davis said. \u201cMore importantly, she has the heart and passion to serve. I have complete confidence in her.\u201d <\/p>\n
