TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WCTV) – A boisterous demonstration on the Florida House floor two weeks ago has led to a reprimand by the House Rules and Ethics Committee of Angie Nixon, a House Rep. (D-Jacksonville) and U.S. Senate candidate.<\/p>\n
Nixon reportedly shouted through a megaphone protesting the new congressional map during a hearing. While the representative was in the meeting room, she was not allowed to speak. <\/p>\n
After the outburst, Rules and Ethics Committee Chair Sam Garrison limited talking to only committee members but he did reference a written statement Nixon provided. Garrison called the reprimand \u201cappropriate and necessary,\u201d while minority leader Fentrice Drickell criticized his decision not to allow Nixon to speak.<\/p>\n
\u201cNo one should take pleasure in reprimanding a fellow member. It stinks. I hate it,\u201d Garrison said. \u201cMy responsibility as Chair is to protect the House, protect this institution.\u201d<\/p>\n
Driskell shared that they should put themselves in her shoes. <\/p>\n
\u201cIf any of us in the future find ourselves standing where she stands, we would want the opportunity to defend our actions.\u201d<\/p>\n
Nixon released a statement after Thursday\u2019s meeting saying that it\u2019s her duty. \u201cI would not be doing my job if I sat silently while Governor DeSantis and Florida Republicans stripped away their voice and their ability to elect candidates they believe in.\u201d<\/p>\n
Thursday\u2019s reprimand is like a formal warning and the committee said that if Nixon violates more policies, she could face censure.<\/p>\n
