TALLAHASSEE, Fla. \u2013 Rep. Angie Nixon, D-Jacksonville, was arrested Friday evening by Capitol Police after about five hours of staging a sit-in outside Gov. Ron DeSantis\u2019 office, according to News 6 partner WJXT<\/a>.<\/p>\n

She began her protest around noon, hoping to speak with a DeSantis staff member to discuss affordability in Florida. Nixon said two protesters who were with her at the time were arrested. At the time of her arrest, five supporters and a group of media members were told to leave the Capitol.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m here because we have continually failed to do the business of the people in this legislative body, in this governor\u2019s office,\u201d she told the News Service of Florida before her arrest. \u201cI\u2019m here because they, instead of addressing the rising costs and the fact that people can no longer to afford to be alive, to stay in Florida … they instead want to rid maps in support of what Donald Trump wants.\u201d<\/p>\n

At the time of her arrest, it was unclear what charges she would face or where should would be taken.<\/p>\n

Nixon is running for the Democratic nomination for U.S. Senate.<\/p>\n

Rep. Nixon issued the following statement: <\/p>\n

\u201cMy commitment has always been to the people of my district and to the Constitution I swore to uphold, not to any political party or agenda. I will continue to honor that commitment by fighting against injustice, defending our democracy, and demanding action on the issues that matter most to the people we serve.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI will not allow our rights and representation to be taken away in silence. At a time when people need their leadership to step up and govern, Gov. DeSantis and the Republican-controlled legislature in Florida are playing politics with people\u2019s lives. I was arrested today along with outraged constituents demanding action instead of doing the job taxpayers send them to Tallahassee for. I am calling for the release of all the peaceful protesters arrested today and for this legislature to revisit the Constitution they claim to uphold so that we can have representative maps.\u201d<\/p>\n

On Thursday, Nixon was reprimanded by the House Rules and Ethics Committee for her loud protest on the House floor last month that disrupted the vote on new congressional district maps.<\/p>\n

The incident wasn\u2019t the first time Nixon caused a commotion on the House floor over redistricting. She led a protest in 2022 when the old districts were approved. The House briefly recessed but returned one hour later to approve the map.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt doesn\u2019t have to be this way, and so that is why I\u2019m here,\u201d Nixon said.<\/p>\n

A request for comment from the governor\u2019s office was not immediately returned Friday afternoon.<\/p>\n
