Angie Nixon, D-Jacksonville, was arrested Friday evening by Capitol Police after about five hours of staging a sit-in outside Gov. Ron DeSantis\u2019 office.<\/p>\n<p>She began her protest around noon, hoping to speak with a DeSantis staff member to discuss affordability in Florida. Nixon said two protesters who were with her at the time were arrested. At the time of her arrest, five supporters and a group of media members were <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"Follow nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/goni_lessan\/status\/2055404408200974547?s=20\">told to leave the Capitol<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m here because we have continually failed to do the business of the people in this legislative body, in this governor\u2019s office,\u201d she told the News Service of Florida before her arrest. \u201cI\u2019m here because they, instead of addressing the rising costs and the fact that people can no longer to afford to be alive, to stay in Florida &#8230; they instead want to rig maps in support of what Donald Trump wants.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>At the time of her arrest it was unclear what charges she would face or where she would be taken.<\/p>\n<p><a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"Follow nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.miamiherald.com\/news\/politics-government\/state-politics\/article314402296.html\">Nixon is running<\/a> for the Democratic nomination for U.S. Senate.<\/p>\n<p>On Thursday <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"Follow nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.miamiherald.com\/news\/politics-government\/state-politics\/article315760553.html\">Nixon was reprimanded<\/a> by the House Rules and Ethics Committee for her loud protest on the House floor last month that disrupted the vote on new congressional district maps.<\/p>\n<p>The incident wasn\u2019t the first time Nixon caused a commotion on the House floor over redistricting. She <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"Follow nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.miamiherald.com\/news\/politics-government\/state-politics\/article260624722.html\">led a protest<\/a> in 2022 when the old districts were approved. The House briefly recessed but returned one hour later to approve the map.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt doesn\u2019t have to be this way, and so that is why I\u2019m here,\u201d Nixon said.<\/p>\n<p>A request for comment from the governor\u2019s office was not immediately returned Friday afternoon.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Democratic State Rep.
