{"id":2741,"date":"2025-10-14T16:22:12","date_gmt":"2025-10-14T16:22:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-fl\/2741\/"},"modified":"2025-10-14T16:22:12","modified_gmt":"2025-10-14T16:22:12","slug":"brandi-gabbard-commits-to-challenge-ken-welch-for-mayor","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-fl\/2741\/","title":{"rendered":"Brandi Gabbard commits to challenge Ken Welch for Mayor"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"p1\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">St. Petersburg City Council member Brandi Gabbard will run for Mayor against incumbent Ken Welch, she <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tampabay.com\/news\/st-petersburg\/2025\/10\/14\/st-petersburg-mayor-election-brandi-gabbard-ken-welch\/?fbclid=IwY2xjawNbTABleHRuA2FlbQIxMQABHoMJCvSh8Ok9FinhK3NWns2vAlmCLPcu5GBWn9dGO_fVSoyM2-m_wb0R-IUT_aem_Y_dKCV1mbvGYMXHtGQPM9A\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener noreferrer nofollow\">told the Tampa Bay Times Tuesday<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">Saying her \u201ccommitment to run for Mayor is firm,\u201d Gabbard told the Times her decision was not necessarily based on opposition to Welch \u2014 she endorsed him in his first election as Mayor \u2014 but rather on \u201ca clear difference in approach to governing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">Gabbard had previously <a href=\"https:\/\/stpete.cityverse.life\/poliverse\/gabbard-denies-involvement-in-mystery-poll-but-not-mayoral-ambitions\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener noreferrer nofollow\">denied being behind a poll<\/a> sent to voters asking about a potential bid, which framed Gabbard as a \u201cproven leader in business and the community\u201d and \u201ccommitted to ensuring St. Pete residents can get affordable flood insurance.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">The poll also claimed Gabbard would be unafraid \u201cto push back on the Republican-controlled Legislature\u2019s seemingly never-ending attacks on home rule,\u201d a poignant point considering recent efforts at the state level to <a href=\"https:\/\/floridapolitics.com\/archives\/755788-state-limits-citys-ability-to-replace-street-art\/\" data-wpel-link=\"internal\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">remove street murals<\/a> at <a href=\"https:\/\/floridapolitics.com\/archives\/754078-st-petes-progressive-pride-mural-the-last-of-5-street-artworks-removed-by-state\/\" data-wpel-link=\"internal\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">various locations<\/a> and to audit the city\u2019s finances in a push to lower property taxes at the municipal level through ad valorem reductions.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">Gabbard has not officially filed to run, as of Tuesday afternoon. But neither has Welch, though he has already begun campaigning and raising funds. His political committee has <a href=\"https:\/\/floridapolitics.com\/archives\/760511-ken-welch-ends-q3-with-200k-plus-on-hand-ahead-of-expected-re-election-bid\/\" data-wpel-link=\"internal\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">more than $200,000 on hand<\/a>. Welch is the city\u2019s first Black Mayor.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/states.aarp.org\/florida\/caregiver-resources\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener external noreferrer nofollow\" data-wpel-link=\"external\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-758233 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-fl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/2224700-Care-FL-Caregiver-Digital-Banner-Ads728x90.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"728\" height=\"90\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">The only candidate filed so far to run for Mayor in 2026 is Maria Scruggs, whose third quarter funding reports showed her raising a mere fraction of what Welch had raised.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">Former state Rep. Ben Diamond considered a bid, but <a href=\"https:\/\/floridapolitics.com\/archives\/753729-ben-diamond-will-not-run-for-st-pete-mayor\/\" data-wpel-link=\"internal\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">ruled it out this Summer<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">While it\u2019s not uncommon for a St. Pete Mayor to face credible re-election opposition \u2014 Welch\u2019s predecessor, Rick Kriseman, a Democrat like Welch, faced a tight race against former Mayor Rick Baker, a Republican \u2014 such opposition typically comes from the opposite political party, even though the Mayor\u2019s race is nonpartisan.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">But Welch is up against a series of missteps that have, at least quietly, raised the specter of unseating him. A September poll from St. Pete Polls commissioned by Florida Politics found Welch only barely above water in voter approval ratings, with less than 38% approving of his job performance and more than 34% disapproving, a difference within the poll\u2019s margin of error.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">As Florida Politics publisher Peter Schorsch <a href=\"https:\/\/floridapolitics.com\/archives\/757426-poll-ken-welch-above-water-but-storm-surge-threatens-to-overtake-him\/\" data-wpel-link=\"internal\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">pointed out<\/a> after that poll was conducted, the last time an incumbent Mayor lost a re-election bid in St. Pete was in 2013. Kriseman defeated former Mayor\u00a0Bill\u00a0Foster, who was\u00a0polling with higher favorability than Welch is now, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tampabay.com\/content\/st-petersburg-mayor-bill-foster-remains-favorable-voters-council-drops\/2101471\/\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener noreferrer nofollow\">above 54%<\/a> in 2012. Foster lost to Kriseman the following year <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tampabay.com\/news\/politics\/local\/kriseman-leading-foster-in-st-pete-mayors-race\/2150994\/\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener noreferrer nofollow\">by 12 percentage points<\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/ncf.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener external noreferrer nofollow\" data-wpel-link=\"external\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-722105 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-fl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/Sunburn_FloridaPoliticsWebsite_728x905186-scaled-e1740018793631.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"728\" height=\"90\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">Welch faces several potential negatives, including the breakdown of the deal with the Tampa Bay Rays to keep the team in St. Pete. There were also reports of Welch\u2019s\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.tampabay.com\/news\/st-petersburg\/2022\/10\/26\/is-being-mayor-st-petersburg-floridas-fifth-largest-city-remote-job\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener external noreferrer nofollow\" data-wpel-link=\"external\">absenteeism at City Hall,<\/a>\u00a0and Welch faced criticism over his administration\u2019s response to last year\u2019s back-to-back hurricanes, with some residents referring to mounds of debris that remained uncollected for weeks as\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/floridapolitics.com\/archives\/704834-is-ken-welch-hiding-in-one-of-his-welch-piles-maybe-not-but-for-the-people-of-shore-acres-he-might-as-well-be\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" data-wpel-link=\"internal\">Welch piles<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">Like Welch, Gabbard is a registered Democrat. As a real estate professional sympathetic to property rights and small business protections, she could offer a more moderate option to Republicans and other conservative voters who don\u2019t see their values reflected in the Welch administration.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">Gabbard is a managing broker for Suncoast Realty Solutions and has been a licensed realtor since 2005.
