The Sanibel School will present its Performing Arts production and the community is invited.<\/p>\n

This year\u2019s annual show will take place on May 20-22 at 6:30 p.m. in the cafetorium at the school, and it will feature \u201cAnnie JR.\u201d Each performance will also include a special opening act.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s a tradition every year at The Sanibel School that we hold a musical theater production that is performed by our Performing Arts class,\u201d Music Department Director Joey Giangreco said. \u201cIt\u2019s a great way to end the year and celebrate the hard work that the students put in throughout the semester.\u201d<\/p>\n

He explained that Performing Arts is an elective class for grades 6-8.<\/p>\n

All of the students are part of the cast and crew for the show, but they have to take part in an audition and interview process for a role, including preparing a song, speaking part, resume and headshot.<\/p>\n

\u201cPerforming Arts is really a musical theater class, so students learn how to prepare all of the elements that go into starring in a musical production, from singing to acting to dancing,\u201d Giangreco said.<\/p>\n

\u201cAnnie JR.\u201d is based off of the original comic strip, which was \u201cLittle Orphan Annie.\u201d It has been a musical with several variations, as well as performed in New York City as a Broadway production.<\/p>\n

\u201c\u2018Annie\u2019 has been a musical that I\u2019ve wanted to do for many years,\u201d he said of selecting it as the production for this year. \u201cBut I\u2019ve always looked for the group that would best fit the cast.\u201d<\/p>\n

Annie lives in Miss Hannigan\u2019s orphanage and gets invited to stay in the Warbucks mansion over the Christmas holidays. Giangreco noted that his students have been working hard to prepare for the show.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere\u2019s a lot of fun that happens,\u201d he said. \u201cWe think that everyone\u2019s going to have a great time enjoying the classic story of Annie and all of the characters.\u201d<\/p>\n

Featured songs will include \u201cMaybe,\u201d \u201cTomorrow,\u201d \u201cIt\u2019s the Hard Knock Life,\u201d \u201cI Think I\u2019m Gonna Like It Here,\u201d \u201cNYC,\u201d \u201cEasy Street,\u201d \u201cYou\u2019re Never Fully Dressed Without a Smile\u201d and \u201cI Don\u2019t Need Anything But You.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cOur production will feature a full set, theatrical lighting,\u201d Giangreco added. \u201cIt\u2019ll be beautifully costumed, and it will feature a live animal as Sandy.\u201d<\/p>\n

The opening act each night will highlight other student ensembles at the school.<\/p>\n

On May 20-21, the Orff Club will take the stage.<\/p>\n

Made up of fourth and fifth graders, the group is named after composer and music educator Carl Orff. The students explore different ways of making music, such as instruments, movements and singing.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey are actually going to be presenting a blacklight show, and we\u2019ll be exploring all of those different ways,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

The program will entail a drum routine for \u201cEntry of the Gladiators,\u201d an arrangement on xylophones and cajon for \u201cRoar\u201d by Katy Perry, \u201cSahara Sunrise\u201d performed on tubano drums and xylophones, and a parachute movement routine to \u201cBaba Yetu.\u201d<\/p>\n

On May 22, the middle school Seahorse Chorale will open for the final show.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe Seahorse Chorale will be performing their set list that we had the opportunity to perform in Boston and New York City,\u201d Giangreco said. \u201cWe will also feature a special song at the end.\u201d<\/p>\n

Seahorse Chorale alumni will be invited to join in singing \u201cFor Good,\u201d from the musical \u201cWicked.\u201d<\/p>\n

A concession stand will be available for food and drinks, with the Annie-related theme of \u201cYou\u2019re Never Fully Fed Without a Smile.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cEach item will have a name that relates to the musical,\u201d he said, citing Miss Hannigan\u2019s twisted pretzels, Sandy\u2019s hot dogs, Little Orphan Annie photo cookies and Rooster\u2019s cotton candy as some.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe concession stand, as well as our ticket sales, help to support our Music Department at The Sanibel School, including proceeds that will go toward our musical production next year,\u201d Giangreco added.<\/p>\n

Available at the door, tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for ages 17 and under.<\/p>\n

The community is invited out for an evening of entertainment.<\/p>\n

\u201c\u2018Annie\u2019 is a feel-good classic musical,\u201d he said. \u201cAnd our students have been working very hard all semester to prepare for this production and they have been doing an incredible job.\u201d<\/p>\n
