It has been over a month since the NBA playoffs kicked off, which means more than half of the league is already deep into offseason preparations. Some franchises are eager to put this single campaign behind them, confident they can contend instantly if they can just avoid devastating injuries to their core stars, teams like the Golden State Warriors, Indiana Pacers, or the Milwaukee Bucks, who parted ways with Doc Rivers and swiftly appointed Taylor Jenkins as their new head coach.

Meanwhile, other rebuilding organizations like the Washington Wizards, Utah Jazz, and Chicago Bulls, all of whom hold top-four selections in the upcoming NBA Draft, are desperate to find relevance and at least claw their way back into the play-in tournament picture after three consecutive years of bottom-tier finishes.

New Orleans Pelicans Hire Jamahl Mosley to Anchor Defense and Unlock Young Core

The coaching carousel took an unexpected turn when the Orlando Magic added their name to the list of vacancies, making the polarizing choice to fire Jamahl Mosley after the roster suffered its third consecutive first-round postseason exit. However, Mosley didn’t stay on the open market for long. While the Bucks moved aggressively to lock up Jenkins, the New Orleans Pelicans swooped in to secure the 47-year-old tactician to spearhead their new era.

Mosley brings a highly respected reputation for player development to Louisiana. Over his five seasons in Orlando, he compiled a 189-221 overall record, but those numbers hide the massive structural turnaround he orchestrated. After enduring a 56-108 stretch during a harsh initial two-year rebuild, Mosley completely flipped the script, guiding the Magic to a 133-113 record over his final three seasons.

More importantly, he established Orlando as one of the most physical, rugged defensive identities in the Eastern Conference, a trait the Pelicans desperately need to replicate.

Pelicans Offseason Outlook: Mosley’s Tactical Challenge and Looming Zion Williamson Decisions

The leadership shakeup in New Orleans has been in motion since executive Joe Dumars dismissed Willie Green following a dismal 2-10 start back in November. Interim coach James Borrego steered the ship for the final 70 games of the regular season, but a underwhelming 24-46 finish highlighted glaring issues with defensive execution and nightly focus.

Mosley now inherits a roster loaded with raw talent, including Zion Williamson, Dejounte Murray, Trey Murphy, Derik Queen, and Jeremiah Fears. His primary mandate will be instilling a culture of defensive pride and accountability in a group that frequently struggled to stop the ball last year.

Retooling the roster around Mosley’s vision will require immense creativity from the front office. Because they traded away their top asset last year, the Pelicans do not own a first-round selection in the upcoming 2026 NBA Draft, leaving them with just the No. 58 overall pick.

Without high-end draft capital to inject immediate depth, the franchise faces a defining crossroads: they must either completely trust Mosley to maximize the current roster, or explore a blockbuster trade involving a marquee name like Zion Williamson.

Given that Williamson has yet to appear in a single playoff game throughout his career due to recurring durability issues, a fresh start under Mosley’s strict defensive regimen, or a complete roster reset via trade, will dictate whether New Orleans can finally become a legitimate threat in the Western Conference.

[11
139,141,140
post-275770","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-orlando","tag-orlando","tag-orlando-headlines","tag-orlando-news
["GET
