Jamahl Mosley didn’t have to wait long to find his next job opportunity in the NBA.

The former Orlando coach was officially hired as the next head coach of the New Orleans Pelicans on Monday, exactly two weeks after he was dismissed by Magic president of basketball operations Jeff Weltman.

Hired by Pelicans executive vice president of basketball operations Joe Dumars, Mosley becomes the 10th head coach in New Orleans franchise history.

“We are thrilled to welcome Jamahl and his family to New Orleans,” Pelicans and Saints owner Gayle Benson said in a statement. “Joe Dumars led a thorough and comprehensive search to find the right leader for our team. He also identified the internal changes needed for organizational growth as we continue building a winning culture that our fans deserve.

“Jamahl is a proven winner and brings the type of leadership, accountability and vision necessary to move our franchise forward,” Benson added.

The Pelicans had been in need of their next full-time coach since they fired Willie Green in mid-November after a 2-10 start to the season. James Borrego, an experienced NBA coach and Magic interim coach in 2015, had served as the interim coach. New Orleans went 24-46 after Green was let go to finish the regular season 26-56, 11th in the Western Conference.

Although Borrego — who had been with New Orleans for three years as an assistant following a four-year stint as head coach of the Charlotte Hornets — closed out the season as interim coach, the Pelicans had reportedly been long admirers of Mosley.

Along with Borrego, the Pelicans had interviewed Brooklyn Nets assistant Steve Hetzel and Milwaukee Bucks assistants Darvin Ham and Rajon Rondo for the job, according to The Athletic. Mosley, however, had been the candidate New Orleans favored for months.

The search process intensified once he was fired by the Magic. ESPN first reported New Orleans’ plans to hire Mosley. He reportedly signed a five-year deal with the Pelicans. Because New Orleans plays in the West, the Magic will face their former coach twice per season; once at home and the other away.

Mosley, 47, helped rebuild Orlando during his five-year tenure that closed out with three straight playoff appearances. The 15th head coach in franchise history, Mosley went 189-221 in five regular seasons in Orlando. In early February, he moved past Doc Rivers (171) for third on the Magic all-time coaching wins list.

Orlando, however, failed to advance out of the first round of the playoffs in all three tries under Mosley while forcing a Game 7 twice in three years. This postseason, the No. 8 Magic took a 3-1 series lead over the top-seeded Pistons, but failed to close out Detroit.

The Magic haven’t won a playoff series since 2010.

Mosley will face a similar challenge in New Orleans. The Pelicans reached the playoffs twice under Green (2022 and ’24) but haven’t won a playoff series since 2018.

For further context, the Magic won 40-plus games the last three seasons with Mosley at the helm — a feat the Pelicans have never accomplished in their 24-year history.

“Jamahl has earned tremendous respect across the NBA for his leadership, professionalism, and the strong relationships he develops with players and staff,” Dumars said. “He has consistently demonstrated an ability to develop young talent while establishing teams that compete with toughness, discipline and togetherness.

“His teams reflect his coaching style through their defensive intensity, effort, preparation and commitment to playing the right way. Those qualities reinforce the long-term stability of a winning culture.”

As Mosley lands with the Pelicans, the Magic are still conducting their own coaching search to replace him.
