As the rainy season approaches, the City of Cape Coral reminds residents and businesses that seasonal fertilizer restrictions take effect June 1.<\/p>\n

Under the City\u2019s fertilizer ordinance, applying fertilizer containing phosphorus or nitrogen is prohibited from June 1 through September 30.\u00a0These restrictions are designed to help protect Cape Coral\u2019s canals and waterways, which play a vital role in the community\u2019s quality of life and local economy.<\/p>\n

When excess nutrients wash into stormwater systems and waterways,\u00a0it can cause harmful algal blooms that can lead to fish kills and pose risks to pets, wildlife, and people who come into contact with affected water.<\/p>\n

REMEMBER:\u00a0During the remainder of the year (October-May), the percentage of slow-release nitrogen content in any fertilizer used must be at least 50 percent.<\/p>\n
