{"id":277349,"date":"2026-05-19T23:38:10","date_gmt":"2026-05-19T23:38:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-fl\/277349\/"},"modified":"2026-05-19T23:38:10","modified_gmt":"2026-05-19T23:38:10","slug":"doj-expected-to-make-announcement-during-miami-event-honoring-brothers-to-the-rescue-plane-shootdown-victims","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-fl\/277349\/","title":{"rendered":"DOJ expected to make announcement during Miami event honoring Brothers to the Rescue plane shootdown victims"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Justice Department is scheduled to make an announcement on Wednesday at Miami&#8217;s Freedom Tower during a ceremony to honor victims of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/the-story-of-1996-shootdown-raul-castro-brothers-to-the-rescue-basulto\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Brothers to the Rescue shootdown <\/a>30 years ago.<\/p>\n<p>Jose Basulto, founder of the group, hopes the announcement will be a criminal indictment of Ra\u00fal Castro.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s time for them to pay,&#8221; Basulto said.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/castro-family-is-still-central-to-cubas-leadership\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Ra\u00fal Castro,<\/a> the powerful brother of the late Fidel Castro, gave orders for Cuban jets to attack the rescue group over international waters, according to prosecutors who have investigated the case. Two planes were shot down in February of 1996, killing four Brothers to the Rescue volunteers who the group says were looking for Cuban exiles at sea.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;He was the one in command of the shootdown, and I believe if anybody needs to be indicted, it&#8217;s him,&#8221; Basulto said of Raul Castro.<\/p>\n<p>Former U.S. Attorney Guy Lewis agrees and says the evidence for an indictment is there.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;There&#8217;s both testimony from individuals who lay out his role.
