His first scrimmage on the Norland sideline came against the very program through which he established himself as one of South Florida’s top defensive minds.

“It’s funny. My first time debuting as defensive coordinator was against Miami Norland, and fast forward to my first head coaching stint, which is now against Miami Norland, even though this isn’t a real game,” Brown said.

Despite the exhibition atmosphere, Norland displayed flashes of the physicality and defensive intensity Brown has become known for. The Vikings played with energy, aggression and discipline throughout stretches of the scrimmage, showing signs that the culture Brown wants to establish is already taking root.

“What we display is what the players will do,” said Brown, emphasizing the importance of accountability and leadership from the coaching staff.

Jerome Thomas Jr. steps into leadership at Northwestern

Jerome Thomas Jr. (left) and Keith Brown (right) after their coaching scrimmage debut for Miami Northwestern and Miami Norland.

(Mark Stallworth for The Miami Times)

On the opposite sideline stood another familiar face.

Jerome Thomas Jr., a former Miami Northwestern player and longtime assistant, officially took over one of the most prestigious football programs in the country after serving as defensive backs coach for the Bulls. Thomas succeeds interim coach Jaquatin “Coach Q” Victrum and former head coach Bridgewater.

With Northwestern carrying the weight of championship expectations every single season, Thomas understands exactly what comes with the job.

And during the scrimmage against Norland, the Bulls received an early reminder that even talented teams have areas to sharpen before August.

“This was the first time we had an officiating staff hold us accountable, and so we have to be more disciplined,” said Thomas.

Accountability is one of the major benefits of spring scrimmages. Coaches finally get to see how players respond when adversity hits outside of controlled practice environments. Penalties, substitutions, communication breakdowns and sideline adjustments all become magnified.

For Thomas, those learning moments were critical.

“Seeing someone else’s scheme and having to make adjustments as coaches is a challenge in itself, so it was good to gain these reps. I know we have a young team, but at the end of the day, they have to grow up and get ready for the summer,” he said.

Even with youth across portions of the roster, the standard inside Northwestern’s program remains unchanged. The Bulls have become synonymous with deep playoff runs and state title appearances, and Thomas made it clear that expectation still exists under his leadership.

Quarterback play is essential, and the Bulls have some on the roster who will need to fill the void left by Neimann Lawrence’s transfer to American Heritage (Plantation).

Dontavious Kinchens and Lamech Rucker Jr. are two standout quarterbacks carving out prominent roles for the Miami Northwestern football program.

“The expectation doesn’t change for Northwestern. I expect the older guys to lead, and I expect us to be in the thick of things come December,” said Thomas.

Toro Wallace ignites excitement at Miami Carol City

Class of 2027 five-star wide receiver Nicholas Lennear transferred to Miami Carol City from Miami Northwestern, and is looking to lead the Chiefs back to their first state championship since 2016.

(Mark Stallworth for The Miami Times)

Perhaps no coaching hire in Miami-Dade generated more buzz this offseason than Toro Wallace taking over Miami Carol City Senior High.

Wallace arrives at Carol City with a championship résumé after spending multiple successful seasons as offensive coordinator and play-caller at the nationally ranked Chaminade-Madonna.

During his tenure, the Lions became one of Florida’s most explosive programs, averaging 43.8 points per game from 2021 through the end of the 2024 season while winning multiple state championships.

Wallace also helped develop elite talent, including standout wide receiver Jeremiah Smith, before his rise to stardom at Ohio State.

Now, he faces the challenge of restoring one of South Florida’s most historic programs back to championship relevance.

“I’m blessed for the opportunity and thankful for Dr. McKinney and the rest of the Carol City faculty and staff for giving me this opportunity,” said Wallace.

“Coaching at Chaminade taught me a lot, and we went against a lot of high-quality programs, and so with that experience, I’ll be bringing it here to Carol City,” he added.

Since arriving, Wallace has wasted little time transforming the roster and creating momentum around the Chiefs program.

Several high-profile transfers followed him to Carol City, including former Chaminade-Madonna quarterback Malik Leonard and highly regarded 2027 receiver Nick Lennear.

The excitement surrounding the Chiefs was evident throughout the scrimmage as college recruiters lined the fences, evaluating talent from both sidelines.

Wallace emphasized that spring football is about more than just established stars.

“Benefits of scrimmages allow us to evaluate the younger talent, and I’m happy with what we’ve seen so far,” said Wallace.

On the field, Carol City showed flashes of explosive offense, physical defense and speed at multiple positions. But Wallace believes the defining trait of his team will be toughness.

“It’s going to hurt to play Carol City. We will be really physical every Friday night,” said Wallace.

Under the South Florida heat and in front of a crowd packed with college scouts, Ives Estates Park…

[9
118724,118715,22294,118718,118713,118708,118711,118710,123,118707,125,124,118705,118706,373,118704,118719,118722,118723,118725,118716,118714,118709,118721,118720,118712,118717
post-278106","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-miami","tag-carol-city-chiefs","tag-college-scouts-high-school-football","tag-florida-high-school-football","tag-hialeah-senior-high-football","tag-high-school-football-in-miami-dade","tag-ives-estates-park-scrimmage","tag-jerome-thomas-jr-miami-northwestern","tag-keith-brown-miami-norland","tag-miami","tag-miami-carol-city-football","tag-miami-headlines","tag-miami-news","tag-miami-norland-football","tag-miami-northwestern-football","tag-miami-dade-county","tag-miami-dade-county-football","tag-miami-dade-football-showcase","tag-norland-vikings","tag-northwestern-bulls","tag-offseason-football-showcase","tag-palmetto-senior-high-football","tag-south-florida-football-programs","tag-spring-football-scrimmage","tag-spring-practice-football","tag-state-championship-football-programs","tag-toro-wallace-miami-carol-city","tag-true-north-academy-football
["GET
