Fla. — A months-long dispute between Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier and the NFL over the league\u2019s diversity hiring policies has entered a new phase, with Commissioner Roger Goodell saying the league is now actively engaging with Florida as both sides review the policies.<\/p>\n
After multiple letters, website language changes and a new subpoena, the NFL says it is engaging directly with Florida while continuing to defend its approach to diversity initiatives, including the so-called Rooney Rule.<\/p>\n
The conflict began in March, when Uthmeier accused the NFL of violating Florida\u2019s civil rights law. The Rooney Rule requires NFL teams to interview minority candidates for certain leadership positions, including head coach and general manager jobs.<\/p>\n
\u201cFlorida law is clear. Hiring decisions cannot be based on race,\u201d Uthmeier said. \u201cThat\u2019s discrimination.\u201d<\/p>\n
Uthmeier has argued the policy should be merit-based. \u201cNFL teams and their fans don\u2019t care about the race of their coaching staff. They want a merit based system that gives their team the best chance to win,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
At the 2026 NFL annual league meeting, Goodell defended the policy, saying the league believes diversity has helped the NFL and insisting the Rooney Rule is not a hiring mandate. Goodell also said the rule was designed to expand opportunities and help teams identify the best possible candidates.<\/p>\n
More recently, the NFL responded directly to Uthmeier\u2019s letter, defending its policies while also making changes to language on its website related to some of its diversity programs. Days later, Uthmeier posted on X that while he appreciated the NFL\u2019s changes, the moves also raised more questions about the league\u2019s policies.<\/p>\n
Uthmeier then sent a second letter and issued a subpoena seeking information about the Rooney Rule, the Accelerator Program and other NFL development initiatives. \u201cWe\u2019re demanding the NFL suspend the rule and failure to do so may result in enforcement actions against the league for race based discrimination,\u201d Uthmeier said.<\/p>\n
Now, the tone appears to be shifting. At this week\u2019s spring league meeting, Goodell said the NFL is always reviewing its policies to make sure they are consistent with the law, while also working with Uthmeier to address concerns about the league\u2019s diversity initiatives as the investigation continues.<\/p>\n
