Steel construction is underway on a 35,000-seat arena and athletic center set to open for the Bulls\u2019 2027 season on-campus.<\/p>\n

TAMPA, Fla. \u2014 Construction workers and heavy machinery are operating around the clock at the University of South Florida, where the physical frame of a long-awaited athletic milestone in Tampa is taking shape.<\/p>\n

The $348.5 million project<\/a> will bring USF football to a permanent home on campus for the very first time. For a program that has spent decades playing its home games off-site, the rising iron skeleton represents a critical shift in institutional identity and student culture.<\/p>\n

The centerpiece of the development near USF Sycamore Drive is a new 35,000-seat stadium<\/a> and an accompanying football operations hub, scheduled to fully open in time to welcome fans for the 2027 season.<\/p>\n

Central to the project is the TGH Center for Athletic Excellence<\/a>, a sprawling 150,000-square-foot facility designed to serve as a comprehensive anchor for the university\u2019s football program. The complex will house coaching offices, specialized physician and sports medicine spaces, and state-of-the-art weight rooms.<\/p>\n

“The TGH Center for Athletic Excellence is 150,000 square foot facility that will be our 365 day home per year to our student athletes,” said Rob Higgins, USF’s CEO of Athletics.<\/p>\n

Among the standout architectural features is a new Field Club located on the north side of the venue, designed to create a direct, seamless connection from the locker room to the playing field.<\/p>\n

“Our student athletes will have the experience of being connected via tunnel from their locker room to then run out via the Field Club,” Higgins said.<\/p>\n

Project planners intend for this layout to maximize fan engagement. “I just think about what that will look like for our fans to cheer on and give high fives to the players right before they hit the field to get the big win in front of what will be the best atmosphere in all of college football,” Higgins added.<\/p>\n

The stadium’s design balances modern fan experiences with long-term flexibility. Plans feature a massive video board and a multi-purpose South Tower. According to athletic officials, the tower will offer premium hospitality options, which “starts at the top with the longest rooftop bar in the state of Florida,” Higgins said.<\/p>\n

The bowl itself will feature an 8,000-seat student section to anchor the game-day environment for a program that finished in the top 25 of the Associated Press poll last season.<\/p>\n

University officials have actively integrated the student body into the physical construction of the venue. More than 5,000 USF students signed a massive, 10,000-pound steel beam<\/a> that will be permanently installed in the structure. The beam is just one of more than 7,100 structural steel pieces required to complete the project.<\/p>\n

“You’re starting to see the steel come around right here, that’s part of it into the ground,” Higgins said, pointing to the rising framework. “These students are leaving their mark on the stadium. Just like the stadium is going to leave its mark on all of our 400,000 living alumni.”<\/p>\n

Though the initial seating capacity is set at 35,000, university officials noted that design and structural upgrades have already been incorporated into the current phase of construction to allow for potential future stadium expansions beyond that baseline.<\/p>\n

Despite the rapid pace of construction, the Bulls must navigate one final interim chapter before moving into their permanent home.<\/p>\n

USF will play its home games away from campus for one more year, kicking off its 30th football season this fall on Sept. 5 against Florida International University at Raymond James Stadium.<\/p>\n

University officials announced that the stadium’s official website is scheduled to debut next month, providing the public with a comprehensive look at ticket options and venue offerings.\u00a0<\/p>\n
