{"id":279618,"date":"2026-05-21T16:09:14","date_gmt":"2026-05-21T16:09:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-fl\/279618\/"},"modified":"2026-05-21T16:09:14","modified_gmt":"2026-05-21T16:09:14","slug":"rays-stadium-deal-puts-nearly-1b-in-public-money-on-table-after-county-approval","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-fl\/279618\/","title":{"rendered":"Rays\u2019 stadium deal puts nearly $1B in public money on table after county approval"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p data-v-94395e58=\"\">TAMPA, Fla. &#8211; The next major step in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fox13news.com\/tag\/mlb\/rays-baseball\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Tampa Bay Rays<\/a> stadium push begins Thursday morning at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fox13news.com\/tag\/us\/fl\/hillsborough\/tampa\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Tampa <\/a>City Hall.<\/p>\n<p data-v-94395e58=\"\">City Council members are scheduled to vote at 9 a.m. on the first piece of Tampa\u2019s proposed $180 million contribution to the project: $80 million from the city\u2019s portion of the Community Investment Tax, a half-cent sales tax renewal that takes effect in December.<\/p>\n<p>   <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-fl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/1779379753_171_vlcsnap-2026-05-14-19h04m12s395.png\" alt=\"\" loading=\"lazy\" fetchpriority=\"auto\" data-v-2fe2fe3e=\"\"\/>  <\/p>\n<p data-v-94395e58=\"\">If that passes, council members are expected to meet again at 11 a.m. as the Drew Park Community Redevelopment Area board is considering the second piece: $100 million from the Drew Park CRA. That money would cover upfront costs and be paid back through future property tax growth in the redevelopment area.<\/p>\n<p>  City Council voting on Rays&#8217; stadium deal <\/p>\n<p data-v-94395e58=\"\">The city\u2019s two votes are tied to the nonbinding memorandum of understanding, or MOU, for a proposed new Rays ballpark on the Dale Mabry campus of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fox13news.com\/tag\/us\/fl\/hillsborough\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Hillsborough<\/a> College.<\/p>\n<p data-v-94395e58=\"\">Together, the city\u2019s $180 million share would join the county\u2019s proposed $796 million contribution. The larger stadium project is estimated at $2.3 billion, with the Rays responsible for more than $1 billion and any cost overruns.<\/p>\n<p data-v-94395e58=\"\">Supporters say the project would keep Major League Baseball in Tampa Bay, redevelop part of the Drew Park area and bring new investment to Hillsborough College.<\/p>\n<p data-v-94395e58=\"\">Critics question the amount of public money involved and whether taxpayers would take on too much risk.<\/p>\n<p> Commissioners approved the nonbinding MOU <\/p>\n<p original-article-post=\"\" origination_station=\"WTVT\" data-v-ec26887a=\"\" data-v-94395e58=\"\">What we know:<\/p>\n<p data-v-94395e58=\"\">The city votes come one day after <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fox13news.com\/news\/tampa-bay-rays-stadium-plan-advances-5-2-county-vote\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Hillsborough County commissioners approved their part of the nonbinding MOU in a 5-2 vote.<\/a> The county\u2019s share of the funding is listed at $796 million. County staff said public safety projects are protected from any impact.<\/p>\n<p data-v-94395e58=\"\">County officials also said the project would need to be added to a list of eligible projects under the Community Investment Tax referendum voters approved in 2022 to avoid a legal challenge over the use of that money. That would require a public hearing process.<\/p>\n<p data-v-94395e58=\"\">Later Wednesday, Hillsborough College trustees voted unanimously to lease 113 acres of school land to the Rays for 99 years. Even if City Council approves both votes Thursday, the stadium deal would not be final.<\/p>\n<p data-v-94395e58=\"\">The MOU is nonbinding and allows negotiators to keep working through remaining issues.
