{"id":279898,"date":"2026-05-21T20:22:09","date_gmt":"2026-05-21T20:22:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-fl\/279898\/"},"modified":"2026-05-21T20:22:09","modified_gmt":"2026-05-21T20:22:09","slug":"jacksonville-community-pools-open-memorial-day-weekend-heres-what-to-know","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-fl\/279898\/","title":{"rendered":"Jacksonville community pools open Memorial Day weekend \u2014 here\u2019s what to know"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">JACKSONVILLE, Fla. \u2013 Jacksonville is kicking off summer with a splash. <\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">The city is opening 30 community pools this Memorial Day weekend, with an additional pool slated to open later this summer.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">Mayor Donna Deegan and Daryl Joseph, director of Parks, Recreation and Community Services, are expected to make the announcement Friday, May 22, at Blue Cypress Park Pool, located at 5461 Golf Course Dr.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">The pool openings mark a significant improvement from when Deegan first took office in 2023, when roughly half of the city\u2019s pools were operational. The city has since invested in getting more pools up and running.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">Kenneth Woods, a Jacksonville resident, says the progress is noticeable.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">\u201cThat\u2019s better than last year. That\u2019s a lot better than last year,\u201d Woods said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">For Woods, the pool openings are personal. His children grew up swimming at Adolph Wurn Pool \u2014 one of the pools not yet open this weekend \u2014 and he\u2019s hoping his 7-year-old granddaughter will soon be able to swim there, too.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">\u201cMy kids grew up, they swam in this pool,\u201d he said. \u201cI\u2019d like to see her swimming again. Hope to teach her how to swim completely. She just turned seven, but it\u2019s time for the swimmies to come off there,\u201d Woods added.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">The city says it has approximately 300 lifeguards on staff and feels confident pools will be fully staffed. The first session begins June 8 at pool locations throughout Jacksonville.
