Fans may be surprised to learn just how much Epic Universe President Jeff Polk and other leaders meticulously study how visitors interact with and emotionally connect with the new theme park.

As I waited for the group interview to begin, I took a moment to reflect on my past visits to Epic Universe. Many moments of discovery and surprise came flooding back. And according to Epic Universe President Jeff Polk, that’s exactly what they’re aiming for.

During a small-group interview with Attractions Magazine and other theme park industry publications, Polk reflected on Epic Universe’s first year and how guest reactions continue to guide the park’s ongoing development.

“We’re always learning,” Polk said. “Guests tell you a lot by how they move through the park, what they respond to, what they gravitate toward.”

Hiccup and Toothless character meet and greet

Polk shared how guest behavior has played a major role in shaping operational decisions throughout the park’s first year, influencing everything from entertainment and seasonal offerings to guest services and nighttime experiences.

Epic Universe operations are still adjusting

According to Polk, one of the biggest lessons from Epic Universe’s first year has been understanding how guests naturally experience the park differently throughout the day. That includes how visitors distribute themselves across portals, how long they stay in Celestial Park during the evening hours, and how vacation travelers and international visitors all interact with the resort in different ways. And that’s before annual passholders fully enter the mix.

Polk said the park’s operating approach continues evolving as Universal studies those patterns.

“We don’t want to overstep our capability,” Polk said, discussing the balance between attendance levels and maintaining a strong guest experience.

He also noted that later operating hours will become important as guests spend more time enjoying the atmosphere, lighting, entertainment, and nighttime energy throughout Celestial Park. I asked Polk about some things that have surprised him in this first year, and he responded with genuine enthusiasm about the positive responses guests and fans have to the lighting and synchronized LED lights throughout Celestial Park. We theme park fans are a detailed bunch.

Guest services were designed to feel more accessible

Polk also discussed several operational details intentionally built into Epic Universe to help guests access assistance more naturally throughout the day.

That includes smaller concierge-style guest service locations positioned throughout the park, allowing visitors to resolve issues or ask questions without returning to the front entrance. It’s a modern approach to distribute services closer to where guests already are.

Other operational systems, including photo validation technology and park entry procedures, continue evolving as Universal studies guest movement and traffic patterns during the park’s first year.

Entertainment and seasonal offerings may continue growing

Polk hinted that Epic Universe’s entertainment footprint could continue expanding as the park enters its second year. He specifically pointed to the popularity of in-world performers and atmospheric entertainment throughout the park, particularly in Dark Universe and Isle of Berk.

One example guests have embraced is Captain Cacao, the adventurous Celestial Park character who starts interacting with visitors today, the park’s one-year anniversary. the land. Polk also noted that spontaneous guest reactions to characters and performers like Ygor and Hiccup with Toothless have reinforced the importance of live entertainment as part of the overall Epic Universe atmosphere.

“I love all the in-world performers,” Polk said, adding that more live entertainment could eventually become part of the park’s future evolution.

Polk also suggested Universal may continue expanding Epic Universe’s holiday atmosphere over time, including additional decor and seasonal offerings.

“Probably gonna amp the holiday decor this year,” Polk said.

Celestial Park Christmas holiday decorations.
Courtesy of Universal

Food and beverage offerings may also continue to change seasonally as Universal evaluates guest response to various experiences around the park. Polk specifically noted that the popular mac ‘n’ cheese cones from the Isle of Berk will continue to have a special seasonal flavor throughout the year.

Small details continue shaping guest reactions

Beyond operations and entertainment, Polk emphasized that some of the strongest guest reactions come from environmental details many visitors may not consciously notice at first.

He referenced design work throughout the park, including the intricate landscaping and visual details surrounding Dark Universe’s buildings. “Those small moments are what guests react to,” Polk said.

According to Polk, those details help guests form more personal connections with the environments around them, particularly as they revisit the park multiple times. And as someone who adores theme parks, I wholeheartedly agree.

As Epic Universe enters its second year, Polk said that ongoing evolution remains part of the park’s long-term philosophy. “People experience the park differently every time they come,” Polk said. “That’s part of what makes it special.”

One year in, Polk said Epic Universe is no longer simply introducing guests to a new theme park — Universal is now actively shaping the park’s future around how visitors use it, explore it, and return to it.

“We want to be reactive to what guests feel passionate about,” Polk said. And that’s part of what makes theme parks such a unique form of entertainment. They are living, breathing creations shaped over time by the people who experience them.

More Attractions Magazine stories

Follow us:

No matter where you want to go, our trusted partner MEI-Travel will handle the planning so you can focus on the memories.
