PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. (CBS12) \u2014 Residents in the Tradition community<\/a> say they are being left completely in the dark after their homeowners’ association issued a blanket ban on firearms in all common areas. Despite widespread frustration and a flood of inquiries from homeowners, the HOA has remained silent, refusing to answer questions about the sudden policy change.<\/p>\n

The communication breakdown began after the Tradition HOA distributed a letter announcing that firearms would no longer be permitted in shared neighborhood spaces. Since then, residents trying to reach management for clarification have faced a wall of unanswered phone calls and automated systems.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe have called, but I think we’re all getting kind of the same feedback,\u201d said Tradition resident Taylor Welsh. \u201cJust so that, we’re free to leave a message, but there’s no one really answering our questions at the time that we call.\u201d<\/p>\n

Other community members expressed anger over how the association is managing neighborhood funds to push a policy that state officials have already deemed illegal. Residents questioned why the HOA spent resources to mass-distribute a directive that goes against state law.<\/p>\n

“I personally think the people that did this, they wasted all our money,” said Tradition resident George Goodwell. “They sent out a flier to all these people here when I’m legally allowed to carry a firearm, and they just wasted money that they charge us $207 an HOA, they just wasted X amount of money just sending out a thing that didn’t make any sense.”<\/p>\n

The lack of response from the HOA is now drawing heat from the highest levels of state law enforcement. <\/p>\n

Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier<\/a> weighed in on the controversy, declaring the firearm ban entirely illegal. In a written statement, Uthmeier noted that because the HOA operates as a not-for-profit entity, it lacks the legal authority to restrict the rights of law-abiding citizens or discriminate against homeowners who carry firearms legally. The Attorney General’s office warned that if the association fails to immediately repeal the restriction, the state will take direct legal action.<\/p>\n

Local residents have voiced strong support for the state’s decision to intervene, arguing that law enforcement and community leadership should focus on actual safety issues rather than penalizing law-abiding gun owners.<\/p>\n

“I think the man’s doing the right thing,” Goodwell said in reference to the Attorney General’s ultimatum. “He’s got better things. They got better things to do than worrying about somebody carrying a firearm that’s not doing any harm or anything else like that.”<\/p>\n

CBS12 News <\/a>reached out repeatedly to the Tradition HOA to get answers for the residents regarding the firearm ban and the financial complaints, but the association did not respond to requests for comment.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"PORT ST.
